This stack of records tells a story. Since March 2022, the first year we kept detailed filter records, we’ve distributed or checked water filters 𝟰𝟴𝟭𝟰 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀! Behind every page is a Honduran family, a conversation, and an opportunity to improve health through clean, safe water.

This photo was taken during a filter distribution in Las Jaguas in May 2025. In the foreground, Dr. Angel (gray scrub top), Churri (blue top), and Dr. Amy (red top and hat) are working with local families, teaching them how to properly care for their water filters and providing clean water education. In the background, Dr. Ted Lee (light green shirt and hat) is leading our "practice station," where families have extra time to practice using their filters. Our experience has shown education and hands-on training are just as important as the filters themselves.

Each family who brings their filter to a checkup receives several helpful items: 1) A “filter sweater”—a knitted, crocheted, or quilted cover that protects the filter if it’s dropped. These sweaters are made by people in my community. 2) A syringe for backwashing, which helps clear debris trapped between the filter’s tubules. 3) Soap for washing their clean‑water storage containers. Recent testing by Ted Lee, his graduate students, and Michael Murphy showed that some storage containers were contaminated—contaminated storage leads to contaminated backwash water, which then contaminates the filter. 4) A coloring book and crayons- the book contains puzzles for kids, simple instructions on caring for the filter and reminders of all the ways to use clean water in their lives. 5) Beans- Each family that brings their own filter to our brigades receives a bag that will feed the family for 3–4 days. Some families even plant the beans when their own crops fail. Much of Honduras has faced severe drought in recent years due to climate change. The beans are also a thank you for coming to our brigade.

Amazing things happened this month as we partnered with Honduras Health Horizons (H3). O𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 completed filter checkups and provided clean‑water education to 230 rural Honduran families, each visit reinforcing the long‑term impact safe water has on community health. 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐬:𝐇𝟑's medical team, one of our partner brigades, delivered essential care to 664 patients, provided dental services to 70 patients, and distributed 50 maternity bags—along with more compression hose than they could count. Their commitment to meeting critical needs continues to strengthen the reach and effectiveness of our shared mission. So grateful for the collaboration, not only from H3, but also from our village advocates and the families who attended our brigades. We can accomplish so much more when we work together!

When we distribute a Sawyer to a new household, each family will work with one of our Honduran trainer learning about the impact of drinking contaminated water on their family's health, how to assemble their filter, how to care for their new filter and all the uses of clean water. After their training is complete, each family till take their filter to one of our practice stations. Here each new filter owner has a chance to practice their new skills, receive additional training and ask questions. Dr Ted Lee and Vicky manned our practice station during a May 2025 filter distribution. (Vicky-- we missed you during our brigade this month!!!!)

Thank you to Honduras Health Horizons:H3 for letting us tag along with their medical brigade this month. What a great group of people who are passionate about making a difference for those in rural Honduras! It was wonderful week working with old friends and making new ones!

Yesterday in Chaquite, we checked 56 filters. The filters and our training seem to be working well. Since their water can be very dirty during the rainy season, we deep cleaned everyone’s filters. Thank you to Tulio, our filter advocate, in Mata! On the road to El Plan today with the medical brigade.
