Statement from the Old Catholic Union of the West
We have observed with deep concern recent news that the national governing body of the Church of England has chosen not to move forward with proposals to authorize standalone blessing services for same-sex couples after many years of sincere and prayerful deliberation.
We recognize the earnest hopes of many who were awaiting a clear sign of welcome and affirmation, as well as the honest convictions of those who have approached this matter from a different theological perspective. We acknowledge the grief and disappointment felt by faithful Christians, especially LGBTQ+ disciples and clergy, who hoped these proposals would offer fuller spiritual embrace and sacramental recognition.
In moments such as this, we are reminded that the life of faith is marked by journeys of both longing and patience. Christians across history — from the earliest churches through every age — have encountered seasons of hope, frustration, and renewed trust in God’s steadfast care. To all who are hurting: hold fast to Christ, whose love never fails, and rest in the assurance that your dignity and belonging are cherished by God and by us.
Our community remains committed to walking with every person who seeks the presence of God in their life — without conditions, without exclusion, and with a heart attuned to the Spirit’s guidance. Let every soul find a place of prayer, honest reflection, and mutual respect in the communion of saints.
We also recognize that some clergy and ministers may feel particularly disheartened by recent developments. To those whose vocation feels strained or whose sense of calling has been tested, know this: you are valued for your ministry, your devotion, and your witness to the gospel’s power to heal and unite. Our doors are open for conversation, mutual support, and shared service in the mission of Christ’s inclusive love.
May the peace of Christ, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and give you wisdom in times of uncertainty. We continue to pray for unity in truth, compassion in dialogue, and freedom in faith.
