Micah Corps do justice - love kindness - walk humbly with God
Micah 6:8 To do justice, we are learning and sharing about four social justice issues that effect our world.

Micah Corps is a United Methodist internship that is sponsored by the Great Plains Conference. We are based off of Micah 6:8, "He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" Throughout the summer we seek to fulfill what the passage says by doing just

ice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God. We are focusing on Immigration, Children in Poverty, Peace and Non-violence, and Environmental Stewardship. To love kindness we are delivering our controversial messages to churches in a loving way and respect the opinions of others in the churches we present to. To walk humbly with God, we are learning and practicing different prayer methods, like the labyrinth and the Lectio divina. Twitter:

You have 3 more days to sign up for our Justice Encounter! Our interns have been working hard on this day, you won't want to miss it!

All Great Plains United Methodists and friends are invited to join the Micah Corps, Asbury Mount Olive United Methodist Church, Cafe Quetzal, and University United Methodist Church to journey through justice movements of the past and present in Topeka, KS. The day will include learning about community gardens, lunch at Cafe Quetzal, and a panel on how to do justice in different congregations and ministry contexts. Our guiding scripture is from Matthew 5. "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Together, let's explore what this scripture means for us as the body of Christ today!

We will begin at Asbury-Mount Olive UMC at 9:30 a.m. Cost to attend is $5/person. Deadline is July 31, 2025. https://www.greatplainsumc.org/eventdetail/19146379?month=8&year=2025&day=1&display=m&fbclid=IwY2xjawL0o5FleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHiWhXazz_KmAJtVVoJwlk3wff9HTMi6xEaO6LQepfRBxEohwAXrZCL9hjPxW_aem_xj1y7NqhIa9ZexetGyuD2w

Hello! My name is Odyssey Heredia. I am a pastor’s kid, meaning home has been many places for me. I have connections to the Rio Grande Conference, the New Mexico Conference, and the Great Plains Conference. I would consider my home church to be Del Valle UMC in Mesquite, New Mexico.
I graduated from El Paso High School in 2020 and went on to attend Southwestern College, a Methodist-affiliated college in Winfield, Kansas. There, I earned a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion with a minor in Music. I am now entering my third year at Yale Divinity School, pursuing a Master of Divinity (M.Div.), and I’ve recently begun the ordination process as a deacon in the United Methodist Church.
I’ve been involved in the United Methodist Church for as long as I can remember. At the local church, I served as a worship leader and participated in our tech team and youth leadership. At the conference level, I was a team leader for CCYM and served as the youth vote representative in high school. In college, I remained active in campus ministry through discipleship and worship outreach initiatives.
The experience that most prepared me for this internship was my sophomore summer with Micah Corps, a program in the Great Plains Conference focused on faith-based social justice work. Through hands-on ministry, I saw the practical ways faith and justice intersect. That summer included a trip to Washington, D.C., where I first encountered GBCS’s mission. I knew then that I wanted to return.
At Yale, I continue to stay engaged in community and advocacy. I serve as a Graduate Assistant at La Casa Cultural—Yale’s Latinx Cultural Center—and as Vice President of the Yale Divinity School Student Government.
I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities God has given me to prepare for this summer under the supervision of Aimee Hong, Assistant General Secretary of Programs.
I have always had a big heart for justice and mercy. I believe that “faith without works is dead.” It is not enough to proclaim faith; we must live it out. As Christians, we are called to love our neighbors and envision a world where everyone is celebrated for who they are and loved as children of God. Jesus showed us what it means to

HOMEaha!!

I successfully convinced Micah Corps to visit the city I grew up in!

We had an amazing visit meeting up with our friend Andrea! First, we visited a United Methods Church, coffee shop, and bookstore! We continued our day visiting two incredible Omaha non-profits, both who have their roots in the United Methodist Church. The first was who focuses on food justice through education, seed saving, and gardening! We also visited and learned about its role in helping immigrants and refugees in Omaha.

What a great day!

Week 3- Civil Right Immersion trip!

I want to recommend everyone research the history of Civil Rights in your community! To start, the link below will take you to the EJI website, for a list of documented racial terror sites, so you can familiarize yourself with your state and county’s history.

The 2025 Civil Rights Immersion in 0.5’s :)

What a great trip! I learned so much and gained so many new friendships from across the conference.

Here are a few things I am taking away:

1) Change starts with everyday people. With parents, teachers, neighbors, accountants, salesmen, and students.

2) To be joyful and to keep moving forward is resistance.

3) Community is the center of change.

The Civil Rights Movement didn’t happen with complete strangers. The civil rights leaders broke bread together, celebrated birthdays, worshiped in church together, and laughed with each other.

As I go back to Topeka to complete my internship I will be focusing on, and calling all of you, to truly know your church family. I’m not talking just shaking hands to pass the peace. Maybe this Sunday, you stay after for five minutes and learn a new name and face.

Jesus taught us not to stand on street corners alone, but to eat and be together in community. Creating a space where everyone belongs, is celebrated, and is heard, is justice.

Peace and love,
-Brenna

Hi y’all!! Carli here :) this week Brenna and I were blessed to attend Annual Conference (our first time!) It was a great opportunity to learn more about the business, work, and history of the Great Plains Conference. There was an incredible workshop about Immigration where we received helpful information about contacting our representatives. It was a great first week and I can’t wait for more!
