Dear Parishioners:

I hope that the summer months permitted you refreshing time with family and friends. I express my appreciation to those parishioners who have been busy with our newly established Parish Council and its committees during the past several months.

Their ideas, support, and work have been critical in framing and launching, this weekend, our three-year parish revitalization campaign: “Building Parish Life: Enhancing Faith, Generosity, and Service”. I am inspired and enthusiastic!

Three (3) initiatives will kick-off this campaign: a Parish Ministry Fair, Increased Giving Campaign, 2026-27 Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).

PARISH MINISTRY FAIR
Virginia Hill, Pastoral Associate, has been busy putting together a group of ministry opportunities for you to serve our parish community and neighborhood. An in-person fair will be held after all liturgies on the weekend of 9/26-27 and we will hold a Zoom session on Thursday, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. for those wanting more information. We plan to use the parish bulletin, our website, and social media to present these opportunities. More to come!

INCREASED GIVING CAMPAIGN
Yes, we will be asking for greater financial support from you to sustain and grow our parish. We are prudent in our expenditures, but the simple reality is that our revenues do not meet our expenses. We are forced to use our reserves to pay bills. Fortunately, we have some, but this is not viable over the long term. We will speak more about this in the coming weeks. Let me thank you for your current generosity, as we ask for more. More to come!

ORDER OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (OCIA)
Twenty (20) adults have expressed interest in receiving the sacraments at the 2027 Easter Vigil. They will begin preparing on October 7. We hope to pair each candidate with a welcoming parishioner to orient and support them in their future participating in our parish community.

We need your support and participation in these and more. I trust we can count on you.

This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration, the patronal feast of the Church of Our Saviour, at all liturgies. This sacred occasion invites us to give thanks for our parish’s rich history, enduring mission, and vibrant witness in the heart of Manhattan.

Founded in 1955, the Parish of Our Saviour has served generations of Catholics with a deep commitment to faith, beauty, and service. The church building, dedicated in 1959, was designed by Paul C. Reilly, a distinguished architect and member of the Cardinal’s Committee of the Laity of the Archdiocese of New York. Reilly also led the completion of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey.

The architecture of our church itself reflects the mystery of the Transfiguration. Flanking the sanctuary are prominent depictions of Moses and Elijah, the two great figures of the Old Testament who appeared with Christ on Mount Tabor. Their presence reminds us that Jesus is the fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets, and that every celebration of the Eucharist draws us into the same divine glory revealed to Peter, James, and John on the holy mountain.

Among our notable former parishioners is William F. Buckley Jr., founder of National Review and one of the most influential Catholic public intellectuals of the twentieth century. In 2015, the Parish of Our Saviour merged with Our Lady of the Scapular–Saint Stephen, further strengthening the spiritual and communal life of our parish family.

To mark this feast, we are pleased to welcome the Choir of Our Saviour & Sacred Hearts, under the direction of Buck McDaniel, at our Sunday 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. liturgies.

We extend a warm welcome to all parishioners, visitors, and friends joining us for this celebration of our parish’s heritage, identity, and mission in Christ.

Every year, millions of people leave their homes in search for a better life. They flee persecution, violence, hunger, and poverty, and face the unknowns of a harsh and cold world.

In his recent trip to the Canary Islands, Pope Leo encouraged us saying, “Dear brothers and sisters, in a sense, all of us are migrants, for we are all pilgrims on our way to our heavenly homeland. Let us help make this journey more humane for everyone by contributing in whatever way we can.”

The Community of Sant Egidio has long felt that the pain suffered by a man or a woman anywhere in the world is its own pain. We recall Jesus’s instruction to welcome him in the stranger and to love our neighbor, and are therefore committed to welcome these brothers and sisters.

Tragically, many do not reach their intended destination, and their lives are lost along the way.

Join us Friday June 26th at 6:30 PM to remember them and to pray for all those who embark on journeys of hope.

On Good Shepherd Sunday in April, we enjoyed welcoming new parishioners to mingle with our newly formed Parish Council. It’s so exciting watching people transition from visitors to members of our Catholic community.

Summer is a wonderful time to visit us: we maintain a full rota of daily liturgies, and we offer 4 sung liturgies every weekend. Whether you’ve not been with us in a while, or are simply thinking of stopping by to find out who we are, know that you are always welcome at the Church of Our Saviour and the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts.

On Sunday, the 14th of June, we observed the Solemnities of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the patronal feasts of the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

At the conclusion of the 12 Noon Mass, a procession was formed to the courtyard of the Chapel. We crowned the Blessed Mother, and the people joined in singing Salve Regina.

Following Mass, we enjoyed fellowship together at a coffee reception in the chapel’s hall.

This Sunday, we observe the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus at all liturgies, the Patronal Feast of the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary.

As Saturday is the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we will process to the Statue of Mary at Sunday’s 12:00 Noon Mass, crowning her, and singing Salve Regina in her honour.

The Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary was founded in 1914 and the first church was built at 307 East 33rd Street, between First and Second Avenues. In 2007, the parish merged with Our Lady of the Scapular–Saint Stephen. In May 2009, His Eminence, Edward Cardinal Egan, Archbishop Emeritus of New York, dedicated the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary at 325 East 33rd Street. It has served as a mission to the Parish of Our Lady of the Scapular–Saint Stephen, until August 1, 2015, when it became a mission to the Parish of Our Saviour.

This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus, commonly called “Corpus Christi”. The Choir of Our Saviour & Sacred Hearts sings the final liturgies of the season in music by Cristóbal de Morales and Olivier Messiaen.

In 1246, Robert de Torote (d. 1246), Bishop of Liège, ordered the celebration of Corpus Christi within his diocese at the urging of St. Juliana (c. 1194-1258), prioress of the nearby Norbertine Abbey of Mont Cornillon, who had experienced a vision. In 1264, Pope Urban IV (c. 1195-1264), born Jacques Pantaléon and sometime archdeacon of Liège, established the festival throughout the Church and asked St. Thomas Aquinas, (1225-1274) to compose the liturgical texts for the Feast. (St. Juliana, as well as St. Thomas Aquinas and Hugh of Saint Cher (c. 1200-1263), the first to have the Feast celebrated within his diocese.

We’ve fallen a bit behind this season on our social media presence, but we do hope you’ll join us this weekend for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (commonly referred to as “Trinity Sunday”).

Trinity Sunday is the only principal feast of the Church that commemorates a reality and doctrine rather than a person or event. Falling on the Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Holy and Undivided Trinity as the final celebration, after Christ’s resurrection and ascension and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Christians have held a festival to honor the Holy Trinity since the ninth century, when it was celebrated in French monastic communities. In the fourteenth century, the festival was added to the Church calendar and has been celebrated throughout the world since that time.

The word “trinity” is actually not found in the scriptures, but in the Gospel according to Matthew, Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. From the day of our baptism, we are commissioned to go out into the world and show the love God as Jesus showed his disciples.

More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith. We, as the body of Christ—the Church—are called to be a sign in the
world of the Holy Trinity’s unity-in-diversity.
