Loving God, Jesus gave us this new commandment – that really wasn't new, but just a reminder of the Golden Rule that you gave us in the book of Leviticus. We needed this reminder and we need to think about it often as the world keeps trying to divide us. Help us to treat others with love so that our behavior will be a witness of your love for us. Amen.

How well are we doing loving one another? I'm going to start with the family! If your family is anything like mine, you will have at least one person who doesn't speak to another person. Sometimes that one person wants YOU to choose sides. What do you do? Then there's the neighborhood. Feuds happen. What is your response? Moving on to the workplace, do you treat all your fellow workers with equal kindness and generosity? Your family, neighbors and maybe co-workers know that you are Christian. For them, you are an example of the faith that you – that I – profess and there are expectations. We are all God's beloved children. He doesn't play favorites and doesn't expect us to as well. Jesus gave us one command: love one another. I didn't hear any exceptions in this Gospel passage. Sometimes a simple smile can change a person's day. We are usually good when there is a crisis. We send sympathy cards or a meal to someone who experiences a loss. We might help babysit for someone who has a family emergency. But in the everyday, it's how we show respect, courtesy, kindness – love – that lets others know that we care. There's an old story about a monastery where the monks are told that Jesus is one of them. They began to treat each one as if he were Jesus and before long, people flocked to the monastery because of the love they witnessed among the monks. Well, Jesus is among us. He lives in each of us. If we begin to treat everyone as we would treat Jesus, what wonders we might see in our families, our neighborhoods, our workplaces and our churches.

In the earliest of times, in which God sought to form a covenant with His people, Abraham was ordered to circumcise himself as well as his slaves and descendants. Whilst this was a crucial step in the Old Testament for which God sought a symbol of his chosen people, in the New Testament we see his message and mercy extending to all of mankind through his blessed Son Jesus Christ. Whomever one is, wherever one is from, rejoice! For the word of God is open to all!

O Spirit of life, we mourn for the sin that still remains in us and that causes us to stumble at times. But we rejoice that we are the workmanship of God and that He will finish the work He has started. Set us free ever more from bo***ge to our own sinful desires, changing our hearts toward godliness, with Your Word. Amen.

The "law," or "principle," that reigns in the natural man is that of sin, which leads to death. A principal of life works in the believer, however, and this is the work of the Spirit. And the life that He gives sets us free from the dominion of sin and death, for greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world.

Thank you, Lord, for your words of hope both for your apostles and for us. Sorrow lasts for a brief time, but you let us know that joy will be ours for eternity. Amen.

In these last few hours before Jesus is handed over to the soldiers, he is still trying to prepare his apostles for what is coming. His death will be a shock to them even though he told them it was going to happen. Death is always a shock to those left behind, even if the person has been sick for a long time. Sometimes it is even harder if the person has been ill because they rally and we come to expect that they will continue to rally until they don't. Sudden death brings its own form of shock, it brings disbelief. The apostles believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, and can't comprehend his warnings. They just confuse them. They saw Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead just a few days ago, but they still have questions. Jesus tries to give them hope. He tells them that their sorrow will turn to joy, that they will see him again. He had asked Martha if she believed in the resurrection of the dead when he met her at Lazarus' tomb. She said that she did believe. We, too, say that we believe when we accept that Jesus is our Savior. Although our weeping will last more than the three days that Jesus was in the tomb before his resurrection, we can have hope and we can rejoice after the death of a loved one because we believe that we will meet again in heaven. The apostles will weep, and those who had him killed will rejoice. However, it will only be a few days before the tables will turn and the apostles will rejoice because Jesus lives, and the Jewish leaders will be even angrier than before. Now they will be afraid for their own safety if this new "Way" takes root because the Romans will not be pleased. We have an advantage over the apostles because we know the end of the story and, in the words of a hymn, we have "blessed assurance."

God Our Heavenly Father, I thank you for counting me amongst those of your blessed children, who know your name and wish to sit at the feet of your throne. I pray for those to whom you speak, but are too deaf to listen. May they find inner wisdom and the true path into eternal life; through your divine glory and mercy alone, Amen.
