Way of the Cross Over the Brooklyn Bridge

Way of the Cross Over the Brooklyn Bridge The Way of the Cross (Via Crucis or Via Dolorosa) is the act of devotion commemorating Christ’s Passion. Fr. Thomas V. Daily. Accompanied by Fr.

For centuries this tradition has accompanied Christians during Lent and particularly on Good Friday. Luigi Giussani, a teacher and educator, the founder of Communion and Liberation, started proposing this gesture of the Christian faith to his college students, gathering them by the thousands in Caravaggio, a Sanctuary near Milan, Italy. Together with the traditional readings from the Gospel, Giuss

ani introduced short passages from some of the greatest contemporary Catholic writers, like Claudel and Peguy. In 1996 a handful of friends belonging to Communion and Liberation asked for permission to walk the Way of the Cross on the Brooklyn Bridge. Unexpectedly permission was granted by the Authorities and the gesture was blessed by then Bishop of Brooklyn, H.E. Ronald Marino, less than thirty people followed the Cross along the Brooklyn Bridge pathway on a cloudy and rainy day on Good Friday 1996. Year after year the Way of the Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge started growing. Thirty people became a hundred, two, three, four hundred, a thousand until, on Good Friday 2002, almost three thousand New Yorkers followed the Cross all the way to Ground Zero. Last year, over 5,000 people joined in the very public witness and reminder of the event which has saved the world. All are welcome to join us. Donations: http://spot.fund/zZBIiz

Msgr. Luigi Giussani is well-known as the founder of the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation. He is less known for being an original and innovative thinker and educator, who was able to break through the conventional opposition between liberalism and traditionalism, and to propose Christianity in a way that answers the challenges of our time. To make his thought known to a wider public, Crossroads, in collaboration with CL, has established the "Giussani Series on Faith and Modernity" to annually present a specific aspect of Fr. Giussani’s rich theological and pedagogical thought.

The 2018 Giussani Series will focus specifically on how Giussani’s thought addresses the crucial dimension of modernity, which was identified in a 2016 interview given by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI:

“It is no longer man who believes he needs justification before God, but rather he is of the opinion that God is obliged to justify Himself [to man] because of all the horrible things in the world, and in the face of the misery of being human, all of which ultimately depend on Him.”

Grasping the signs and import of an epochal change, in which the burden of proof has been turned on its head, Fr. Giussani made this inversion the cornerstone of his method. Through this event, with Fr. Paolo Prosperi and Michael Hanby, professors at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family, we intend to explore how the theological and pedagogical contributions of Giussani can help all of us, modern people, today.

“What became so clear to me was that we were not just a diverse crowd of people. Rather, we were a diverse crowd of people on the same path, together. We were truly a people. The cries of our hearts sang in unison. And the direction of our gaze was transfixed by the ultimate sign of contradiction: the Cross.”

On Good Friday, Christians across the world commemorate Jesus’ journey carrying the Cross through the streets of Jerusalem by engaging in public “Way of the Cross” spectacles. The spectacles we put…

"He is not here… he is raised! And he awaits you in Gaiilee. He invites you to go back to the time and place of your first love and he says to you: Do not be afraid, follow me."
