Mark 6:14-29 (MSG, NIV, RSV, CEV) describes the arrest, imprisonment, and ex*****on of John the Baptist.
Key Details and Events:
Context: King Herod Antipas hears of Jesus' growing reputation and fears that John the Baptist, whom he had previously beheaded, has risen from the dead.
The Conflict: John had been imprisoned for confronting Herod about his unlawful marriage to Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
The Plot: During a birthday banquet for Herod, the daughter of Herodias (often identified as Salome) danced for the guests, pleasing Herod.
The Promise and Request: A drunken, reckless Herod promised to give the girl anything she wanted, up to half his kingdom. Prompted by her mother, she requested the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
The Ex*****on: Although "exceedingly sorry" or "deeply distressed," Herod complied to avoid losing face with his guests and ordered an ex*****oner to behead John in prison.
The Burial: John's disciples took his body and placed it in a tomb.
