Jeremiah 8:1-2

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words

Jeremiah visits the potter’s house at God’s command. There he learns that the potter sometimes rejected some of the pots, perhaps because of poor quality. So God is sovereign over His people Judah. What the potter makes depends on the quality of the clay; what God makes of His people depends on their response. The clay can frustrate the potter’s intention and make him alter the vessel. As the quality of the clay limits what the potter can do with it, so the quality of a people limits what God will do with them.
