Community of Sant'Egidio - New York City

Community of Sant'Egidio - New York City Sant’Egidio is an international movement of lay people born in 1968 in Rome and now spread in 70 countries. Since then the community has increased.

We are rooted in Prayer, service to the Poor and work for Peace The Community of Sant'Egidio began in Rome in 1968 in the period following the Second Vatican Council. Today, it is a movement of lay people and has more than 60,000 members dedicated to prayer and service, in Rome, Italy and in more than 73 countries throughout the world. The Community of Sant'Egidio is a "church public lay associati

on". The different communities, spread throughout the world, share the same spirituality and principles which characterize the way of Sant'Egidio:

Prayer, is an essential part of the life of the community in Rome and communities throughout the world. Prayer is central to the overall direction of community life. Communicating the Gospel, is the heart of the life of the Community. It is offered to all those who seek and ask for a meaning for their lives. Solidarity with the poor is lived as a voluntary and gratuitous service, in the evangelical spirit of a Church that is the "Church for all and particularly the poor" (Pope John XXIII)

Ecumenism is lived as friendship, prayer and an engaged search for unity among Christians the world over. Dialogue, was recommended by Vatican II as a way of peace and co-operation among religions, a way of life, and as a means of resolving conflicts. The Community takes its name from the small church of Sant'Egidio in Rome's Trastevere neighborhood. From its very beginnings, the Community has maintained a continuous presence of prayer and welcome for the poor and for pilgrims in the area of Trastevere and in Rome. The Community of Sant'Egidio began in Rome in 1968, at the initiative of an 18-year old Andrea Riccardi. He gathered a group of high school students, like himself, to listen to the Gospel and to put it into practice. The first Christian communities of the Acts of the Apostles and Francis of Assisi were the first reference points. The small group immediately began going to the outskirts of Rome to the crowded, impoverished slums and there they began an afternoon school. This first school was known as "Scuola Popolare" ("People's School"); nowadays, they are called "Schools of Peace" and are for children. It is now in more than 73 countries on 4 continents. The number of community members is also constantly growing. There are about 60.000 members as well as many more who are permanently co-operating in the service to poor people and in the various activities of Sant'Egidio without being part of the community in a strict sense. There is also a large number of persons reached by the various activities of service that the community performs.

A long-term campaign for a violence free America beginning with the Year of Mercy. Following the words of Pope Francis to the United States Congress we repeat,

“Why are deadly weapons being sold to those who plan to inflict untold suffering on individuals and society? Sadly, the answer, as we all know, is simply for money - money that is drenched in blood, often innocent blood. In the face of this shameful and culpable silence, it is our duty to confront the problem and to stop the arms trade.
- Pope Francis, 2015

The number of deaths and the spreading of violence in our country urges us to act both personally and collectively; one person at a time, one gesture at a time, one friendship at a time. “Solidarity for Life - No to Violent Deaths - Stop the Easy Access and Improper Use of Guns” is a National Campaign launched by the Community of Sant’Egidio USA on February 7, 2016, to fulfill the duty to which Pope Francis called us.

Join us for our fifth annual Night of Solidarity, taking place on May 14th.

We hope you can be there for another joyful evening filled with vibrant music, a silent auction, and delightful refreshments, as we come together to celebrate our shared mission. Tickets can be purchased: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/night-of-solidarity.

As a community, we have been grateful to see our presence grow across the city, through the House of Solidarity, our outreach to the unhoused, visits to the elderly, and much more.

None of this would be possible without the kindness and generosity of friends like you. Together, we can make a meaningful difference.

We feel a deep connection to Pope Leo and his urgent appeal for peace in the world.

As the Holy Father said we pray for peace not imposed by force, but through dialogue.

Our Community has long understood that prayer and peace are intimately linked, and we continue to believe in the power of prayer, despite the inclination of the world toward force and violence.

Join us the Third Friday of every month at 6:30 PM at the Church of Our Saviour to pray for peace.

As we do every year, we gathered to welcome the resurrection of the Lord as a family of friends. We are moved this Easter to bear the crosses of this world and to walk together to share the light of the resurrection with all, particularly in those areas of the world most troubled by darkness.

We pray that weapons will be silenced and peace will come soon for all. Christ is Risen! Alleluia, Alleluia!

04/05/2026

Christ is Risen! Happy Easter!

May this truly be the beginning of a time of resurrection, in which life triumphs over death and peace soon comes to every people and every human being.

As is our tradition, we begin the year with a March for Peace. On this 59th World Day for Peace, we pray that we can all choose, welcome, and promote peace and that our communities become a ‘house of peace.’ As we begin the new year, we are confident that peace is possible and that with it a better world is ahead. May the Peace of the Lord come soon to every corner of the world.

“Dear brothers and sisters, whether we have the gift of faith or feel we lack it, let us open ourselves to peace! Let us welcome it and recognize it, rather than believing it to be impossible and beyond our reach. Peace is more than just a goal; it is a presence and a journey. Even when it is endangered within us and around us, like a small flame threatened by a storm, we must protect it, never forgetting the names and stories of those who have borne witness to it. Peace is a principle that guides and defines our choices. Even in places where only rubble remains, and despair seems inevitable, we still find people who have not forgotten peace.“

- Pope Leo, Peace be with you all: Towards an “unarmed and disarming” peace
