The New Synagogue

The New Synagogue Providing Spiritual Judaism worship services to the public in New York City Of course, loving donations are always welcome.

WELCOME TO THE NEW SYNAGOGUE

Twenty years after first founding The Little Synagogue in 1977, a synagogue for Spiritual Judaism, Rabbi Joseph H. Gelberman founded the New Synagogue, the first synagogue with no membership fees or dues…the first free synagogue in New York City. His vision was to welcome Jews of every denominations as well as non-Jews who were looking for a place to celebrate and wor

ship the Divine. Rabbi Roger Ross joined Rabbi Gelberman as his Associate Rabbi at the New Synagogue in 1995 after receiving Semicha from the Rabbinical Seminary International, and has served with him until his passing on Rosh Hashanah, 2010. Since the passing of Rabbi Gelberman, Rabbi Ross, along with Cantor Judy Steel, Rabbi Scott Matous and Cantor Jeannie Kwartler, has continued the traditions of the New Synagogue, in the spirit of “Never instead of…always in addition to” which welcomes all people of every faith who wish to experience a joyful and spiritual service dedicated to the Divine of each of our understandings. Rabbi Ross has continued the tradition of having the synagogue be free of membership fees and dues. In the Chassidic tradition of the first Shabbat of each month being a Yom Kippur Katan, “a little Yom Kippur”, the New Synagogue meets on the first Friday evening of each month as well as the High Holidays of each year. Currently, the New Synagogue is holding those services at Grace Methodist Church, 124 W. 104th Street (between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues) Services begin at 7:15pm. Whether you are seeking a synagogue for your first experience of Jewish worship or seeking a synagogue that offers a more joyful and loving experience filled with the energy which infuses Jewish worship, please know that you are always welcome. We invite you to come and experience Jewish worship with us.

My friends,
If you have ever dreamed of visiting the Middle East Holy Land, and if you wanted to experience it through the lens of the heart of the three major Abrahamic faiths that were born there…a lens that fulfills the mantra of “Never instead of, always in addition to”…now that voyage of the heart is possible.
From March 4th through March 16, 2013, I will be one of the spiritual guides, along with a Catholic Priest, an Interfaith Minister and a Muslim teacher, for this Interfaith Pilgrimage and amazing journey. This is a spiritual journey in its truest sense, and is not about the geopolitics of Israel and Palestine. It is about the depth of spiritual connection to the birth energy of this very special place in the world for everyone who is Jewish, Christian and Muslim.
We will have the opportunity to visit some of the holiest places in all three faiths and spend time with the energy of this sacred land for Abrahamic faiths.
Please go online to our website and take a look at www.heartoffaithpilgrimages.com to see all the amazing places we will visit.
This is truly a wonderful opportunity. I invite you to join us.
Please write to me at [email protected], or call 212-864-0261 with any questions and/or comments about this exciting opportunity.
Blessings and great joy,
Rabbi Roger

Most Holy Land tours to Israel give you a single lens through which to experience this beautiful and complex country —you see it only through the eyes of your own faith, or through the lens of history, politics or archeology. While those are wonderful experiences—ones you may already have had—you m...

The New Synagogue, founded by Rabbi Joseph Gelberman, of blessed memory, is a loving and inviting house of worship.
All are welcome regardless of their personal religious beliefs, and we have no barriers based on gender, age, sexual orientation or ethnicity.
Rabbi Roger Ross (Rabbi Gelberman's direct spiritual heir) Cantor Judith Steel (Rabbi Gelberman's cantor and dear companion. friend and "spiritual daughter" since 1979, Rabbi Scott Matous and Cantor Jeanie Kwartler conduct services on the first Friday night of each month and the High Holidays.
Our programs blend traditions from Reform, Conservative and Chasidic streams of Judaism, so all who attend feel comfortable and are familiar with many parts of the service.
Services are held in rental space at Grace Methodist Church (104th street between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues) and start at 7:30pm.
Our synagogue is unique in that it is truly a free synagogue. There are no membership fees or dues. We simply ask for free will donations to help us pay the rent.
If you have been seeking a synagogue with enough flexibility to meet your needs for spiritual satisfaction, come and try our services.
If you would like to know more about the synagogue and our schedule of services, please send an email to [email protected] or call or text to 917-930-1181.
We'd love to hear from you.
Shalom and joy, Rabbi Roger Ross
