Furthering Police Accountability Community Event
The Uptown Youth Collective is sponsoring this community event on Wednesday, January 28, to discuss the following:
What do you currently know about police oversight and accountability?

What are your expectations regarding police oversight and accountability?

What would you like to improve or do differently?

Opportunities to share personal or witnessed feedback to correct these agencies.

Please promote, especially among our youth and young adults, but all community members are invited to participate.

Great turnout at the Fairview Garden Mural Celebration: Inwood Academy HS volunteers and parents, City Art Works, IAL MS staff, Fairview Garden Crew, and Uptown Community Church members. Wow, talk about community!
My personal highlight was talking with the youth about what it is to be a neighbor and loving the community through acts of service. I was able to point them back to thanking God whom all credit is given, and then we broke bread with them. Praise God who allows us to participate in His creative works!
Certificates, awards and gifts were awarded to High School volunteers by Fairview Garden Lot Project and City Art Works.

Stop the Violence Program at The High School for Excellence and Innovation:
Viva Uptown is a member of the Uptown Youth Collective has entered into a partnership with the HSEI to provide workshops and mentoring for their Stop the Violence Program. This program focuses on providing social and emotional learning that leads to restoration and empowering students to be advocates and agents of change in their school and community. On October 24 we participated in the first round of workshops. Joseph Sanchez of the Credible Messenger Mentoring Program led on the History of Gangs and Joselinne Minaya from the District Attorney's Office presented on Dating Violence. Our newest partner, the Office of the Community Liaison led an assembly session on Know Your Rights/Engaging with Police. Principal Tyona Washington comments on our partnership, “The Uptown Youth Collective has been a godsend for our school community. This partnership expanded experiences for our youth in so many positive ways such as deterring students from making choices that could negatively impact their lives. We are grateful for this crucial and well needed partnership to support our youngsters!” We are thankful for her leadership and advocacy and we look forward to contributing to the flourishing of the HSEI community.

Celebrating eight years of Uptown Community Church and our neighbors working together to reclaim and beautify the Fairview Ave Lot. We had a blessed time honoring our volunteers and enjoying food, music and rich conversation. May the Lord receive the glory for allowing us to shine the light of His love through our words and works of the Gospel!

There was good energy and discussion at our Uptown Youth Collective meeting. We are a coalition of youth service providers and young people providing a safety net of resources for young people facing difficult challenges and empowering them be to civic leaders and advocates for the issues affecting their lives and community.
