Sometimes the biggest threat to authenticity isn’t dishonesty.

It’s performance.

We learn what business is “supposed” to look like. We learn how successful entrepreneurs are “supposed” to communicate. We see what works for someone else and begin adjusting ourselves to fit the model.

Learning isn’t the problem. We should learn from people who have wisdom and experience.

The danger comes when learning turns into imitation and we slowly edit ourselves out of what we’re building.

Your assignment may require a different expression.

Your leadership may look different.

Your communication may sound different.

Your business model may even operate differently.

The question isn’t whether you’re doing it like everyone else.

The question is whether you’re building in alignment with what God has entrusted to you.

There is a lot of pressure in the marketplace to figure out how you want people to see you.

What should your brand look like?
What should you talk about?
What should you post?
How should you position yourself?

Those are important business questions, but there is another question that should come first:

Who are you bringing into the marketplace?

Authenticity doesn’t begin with branding. It begins with identity.

Before you decide how you want people to perceive you, become clear about who God has created you to be, what He has entrusted to you, and what convictions will shape the way you build.

Your business doesn’t need a manufactured version of you.

It needs the version of you that is becoming increasingly clear about who you are, what you carry, and how God has called you to serve.

This month at Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur, we’re talking about Authenticity in the Marketplace.

We’re starting with identity before image because the strongest expression of your brand should come from knowing who you are.

QUESTION: What is one part of who God created you to be that you want to bring more fully into your business?

Kingdom business isn’t simply about starting what God showed you. It’s about continuing to steward it as it develops.

Joseph gives us a powerful example. God revealed what was coming, but Joseph didn’t stop with revelation. He developed a strategy that prepared Egypt for the future.

Revelation informed his strategy, and his strategy influenced what they did in the present.

We can approach our businesses the same way. We don’t need to predict everything that will happen, but we can pay attention to where God is leading and make wise decisions about what we’re building today.

Ask yourself what needs to become stronger, simpler, more intentional, or even different in order to support where the business is going.

You don’t have to build everything today. Build today’s part well, while remaining attentive to where God is leading next.

Sometimes we pray for the next level while overlooking what the next level will require.

We ask God for greater reach, more clients, bigger opportunities, increased impact—but are we building the capacity to steward those things well?

Joseph didn’t wait until the famine arrived to figure out what to do.

He prepared during the season of abundance.

That’s wisdom.

As Kingdom entrepreneurs, preparation may look like strengthening your systems, clarifying your message, developing your skills, improving your offers, creating healthier rhythms, or making room for the people and opportunities God is bringing.

Not everything you build today will be visible tomorrow.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t important.

Preparation is part of stewardship.

So instead of only asking, “God, what are You doing next?”

Ask:

“What do You want me to strengthen now so I’m ready to steward what comes next?”

You don’t have to rush into the future.

You can prepare for it—one wise decision at a time.

Sometimes when something stops working in our businesses, we assume we need to work harder at it. We increase the effort without stopping to consider whether the strategy itself still fits what we’re building.

Exodus 18 gives us a great example. Moses wasn’t failing at his assignment, but the way he was carrying it wasn’t sustainable. Jethro helped him see that the work needed to be structured differently.

That’s a valuable business lesson. A change in strategy doesn’t necessarily mean a change in vision.

Take an honest look at the way you’re currently building. Is there a process, strategy, offer, system, or way of working that you’re holding onto primarily because it worked before?

Sometimes honoring what worked in the last season means being willing to recognize when it no longer fits this one.

God can call you to build something you’ve never built before. When He does, you may find yourself completely confident about the assignment while also realizing you don’t have every skill required to carry it.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you misunderstood God. The assignment may require development.

God can give you a vision and lead you toward training. He can give you revelation and send you to wise counsel. He can show you where the business is going while also revealing that your current leadership, systems, marketing, financial practices, or strategy need to grow.

Needing to learn doesn’t make you less called. Learning can be part of how you steward the calling.

As you think about where God is taking your business, consider this question:

What do I need to learn, strengthen, or develop to steward where we’re going well?

Your next step may not be another task. Your next step may be becoming better equipped for what God has already shown you.
