Mahayana Temple

Mahayana Temple Mahayana Temple is the largest and oldest Chinese Buddhist temple in New York State. They are too small for any sizable functions for the parishioners.

There are three locations :
1,Eastern States Buddhist Temple of America (ESBT) NYC
2,City Campus Mahayana Temple NYC
3,Retreat Mahayana Temple upstate NY Having spent several decades in building and completing the first Chinese Buddhist retreat in New York, Mrs. Ying then stopped and looked around to see what else is needed in Greater New York. She discovered that the Buddhist temples in the city

are, even after these many years, still essentially all storefront temples. So, in honor of Mr. James Ying’s 83rd birthday, Mrs. Annie Ying then built Mahayana (City) Temple in the center of New York’s Chinatown. It was dedicated on lunar date March 3rd in 1997. The Eastern States Buddhist Temple and the two Mahayana Temples now stands ready to serve all those who seek a better life on earth as well as a better after life. When the heart is clouded by anger, jealousy, hatred, impatience, fear, or doubt—
When it clings to the regrets of the past—
Precious moments meant for clarity and creation are lost,
Consumed instead by shadows of thought and turbulent emotion.
Thus, the purpose of inner cultivation
Is to strengthen the heart’s resolve
And guide it to dwell only upon what truly matters.

How to Make Your Mantras More Effective

This article is derived from the opening section of the Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on Vinaya (Fo Shuo Pi Nai Ye Jing).

One day, the Buddha was at Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagriha, accompanied by countless bodhisattvas, mantra-chanting immortals, the great sage Brahma, earth deities, and others, expounding the methods of mantra practice. At that time, a figure named Vajrapani rose from his seat, bowed at the Buddha’s feet, and respectfully said, “I now wish to explain the disciplinary rules of mantra recitation. I further hope that the World-Honored One and all the great sages will each share their key insights, offering guidance to all who recite mantras.” He then added, “I beseech the World-Honored One to permit me to speak.”

The Buddha addressed Vajrapani, saying, “You possess great majesty and virtue, with a heart imbued with compassion. By expressing this desire to expound the wondrous Dharma, you will surely bring immense benefit. I grant you permission to speak, and all of us in this assembly will follow the teachings you present.”

Vajrapani then said, “World-Honored One! If virtuous men or women wish to recite mantras and seek their efficacy, they must first diligently apply themselves to the mantras they have received. They should understand the need to make offerings to Buddhist stupas, sacred images, and the deities associated with their mantras, doing so consistently according to their means, without interruption or wavering commitment. Before the Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—they must sincerely confess their faults, make vows, and dedicate the merits of these actions to all sentient beings, wishing for their liberation from suffering.

Passerby: Are you a monk?
Monk: Sort of…
Passerby: Can I ask you a question?
Monk: Please go ahead.
Passerby: I’ve been reciting the Diamond Sutra for two years. Now, I have no thoughts—neither good nor bad. Does this mean I have realized ”no-thought“ (无念)?
Monk: It probably means you have too many deluded thoughts.
Passerby: (Falls into deep contemplation)

The Hundred Spirits of Mountains and Seas“: A Mysterious Kingdom of Beasts

This exquisite scroll painting portrays a variety of mythical creatures, majestic landscapes, and lush vegetation, drawing inspiration from the ancient Chinese classic Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas).

Believed to have been painted during the Ming Dynasty (exact date yet to be verified), the artwork was attributed to the Five Dynasties painter Hu Gui. Interestingly, it even features an inscription falsely attributed to Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty, adding an intriguing layer of historical mystery.

The title inscription on the painting reads: ”The True Masterpiece of ’Exotic Beasts‘ by Tang Dynasty Painter Hu Gui,“ while the front of the scroll bears the name Hundred Spirits of Mountains and Seas, further enhancing its enigmatic aura.

The colophon at the end of the scroll narrates the fascinating journey of this painting through history, inviting viewers to delve deeper into its captivating past.

In the Avatamsaka Sutra 《华严经》, it is said that when we experience emotions or afflictions, there are sentient beings—only then can there be a Buddha. No matter what we are learning, we are ultimately learning a path of Dharma. When we speak of the Dharma path, there is no other choice: we are practitioners of the path, we are people walking upon it.

A practitioner of the Dharma path recognizes suffering and its causes. The path itself is the Dharma path. The path is both the ultimate view and the relative view. To be a practitioner on the Dharma path means that one is not perfect. The only reason the path exists is because there are those who walk upon it.

Every path must have a destination. For Buddhists, that destination is the cessation of suffering and the cessation of the causes of suffering. Sometimes, we call this Nirvana.
