For over eighty years, NFTY - The Reform Jewish Youth Movement, has offered thousands of teens the opportunity to explore and live Reform Judaism.

For over eighty years, the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) has offered thousands of young people the opportunity to explore and live Reform Judaism. Today, over 450 Reform congregations throughout North America sponsor Temple Youth Groups, bringing the NFTY experience to more than 10,000 high school-age young people in grades 9 thru 12. Through involvement opportunities offered by

congregations, our 19 NFTY regions, and on the North American level, NFTYites strive to forge an identity in consonance with the goals and values of Reform Judaism. Stemming from a historic tradition of both Jewish and non-Jewish European youth movements, the North American Federation of Temple Youth (otherwise known as “NFTY”) is the Reform Jewish religious youth movement that fosters leadership at the national, regional and congregational level. It is advised by a set of adult Jewish youth professionals. Comprised of over 500 local synagogue youth groups, NFTY also functions as a youth organization, an affiliate of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), as well as a program of the URJ Youth Division. There is a healthy balance between those aspects of NFTY that are youth-led and those that are directed by its adult advisors. Whether functioning as an organization, program, or youth movement, NFTY is a Reform Jewish community for high school students. NFTYites forge and build friendships, lifelong Reform Jewish identities, and leadership skills through community building, worship, social action, and experiential youth-led Jewish educational programming. Many NFTYites serve as NFTY leaders on the local TYG, regional, and even North American levels. Many NFTY Leaders continue on to become both lay and professional leaders of the Reform Jewish Movement.

Teen leaders across North America are invited to apply for the URJ Teen Leadership Fellowship
- a dynamic program that combines Biennial participation, teen-focused programming, and virtual sessions before and after the Biennial.
Fellows will develop transferable leadership skills, build a supportive network of peers, and gain tools to strengthen their communities as leaders and role models. We condemn today’s Supreme Court ruling allowing states to deny transgender girls the opportunity to participate in school sports alongside their peers. The inclusion of transgender women and girls does not diminish or threaten the equality of all women and girls; it affirms it.

Jewish tradition teaches that all human beings are created b’tzelem Elohim, in the Divine image (Genesis 1:27). This belief is fundamental to Reform Judaism and teaches us that we cannot tolerate discrimination against any person because of their identity. Excluding children from full participation in school life because of who they are violates that sacred principle.

This is a heartbreaking ruling for transgender girls who have asked for nothing more than the same opportunities afforded to their peers. At the same time, we are relieved that the Justices emphasized the narrow scope of this decision and did not set a broad precedent restricting the rights of transgender people in other areas of life. As the majority opinion notes, all students should be treated with respect, regardless of gender identity.

Today, on Yom HaShoah, we remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust and honor the resilience of survivors. We carry their stories forward -- not only in memory, but in action. As Reform Jews, we are called to stand against antisemitism, hatred, and dehumanization in all its forms. May their memory be a blessing — and a responsibility. 🕯️
