🎶 Moribayassa is the sound of gratitude.
This ceremonial rhythm is played for gratitude when a woman has gone through a transition, such as family illness. The drum, a djembe often accompanied with the dunun, keeps the rhythm of this rite of passage.
This ceremony is so significant that a woman can only vow to take it once in her life.
The community dances around the Moribayassa tree as she goes through a process:
🪘She will be wearing old, torn clothes that symbolize the ordeal she's going through
🪘She circles the village 3 to 7 times, accompanied by a musician and the women of the village who follow, singing
🪘She will bury those old clothes at the base of the tree
🪘This ceremony concludes as she moves on into her greater life
The term Moribayassa is from the Malinke people of West Africa. "Mori" means death. "Bayassa" means dance. So this is the movement of rebirth or a return to life.
Moribayassa is blissful. It makes space for the new within the now.
It celebrates women who have overcome a difficult situation. And it celebrates her individual resiliency within the framework of togetherness, making her rebirth communal.
Through ritualized power of drumming and ceremonial theater, these dancers harness rhythm, vibration, and collective energy to produce alchemical magic and initiation.
This is a technology that helps release happen through the body. The dance lets go of the old energies while welcoming new beginnings. It prepares the body for joy.
