We're ba-a-a-a-ck !!!

My long hiatus from this site was due to my OCD involvement in a late-in-life thing with "shipwreck coins".....

I hope that I'm better now, since I almost ran out of money buying... well !!! ... money..... and getting safes and creating a safe room (It's resulted in an ecclectic but pretty good collection/hoard/stack of shipwreck and other disaster coins [like the San Fran earthquake and fire "Granite Lady Hoard" coins, and the 9/11 WTC vault recovery coins] though).

I am also reposting the following earlier item from this blog to put Linda into some context vis a vis Brooklyn College and the BC Newman Alums.....

_______________

BC Newman Club Alums 1964-1976... April 6, 2020... ·
Stan Maslowski and Linda Mollica were both fixtures in the Brooklyn College Newman family at 1260 Ocean Avenue when I first arrived there in the fall of 1966, [along with the likes of juniors Joe, Saunders, Lenny Houston, and Rosemary Neri, and sophomores Buddy Wisniewski,, Tom Morea, John Villanella, Jim Celsi, and Judy Black, and] fellow BC "freshmen" Ann Thompson, Bob McAndrew, John "Dog" Doherty, Jim Krahel, Eddie Chung, Bob Fasano, Jane Fahey, Maria Sorgi, Maureen Kennedy, Ray Wagner, Julio Zangroniz, Donna Howie and Angela Nadej (sorry to the few others whose names escape me)..... And [also that year] newly arrived at Newman, were sophomores Myra Howie, Dorothea Lyden and Nancy Ribaczyk..... In what just seems like a few years since [you do the math], the cozy couple in the photo[s] remain the same Stan and Linda; and apparently very little's changed over those years.....

Hadleys first road trip. Headed to pick up my Aunt Jacquie and move her from Pittsburgh to a facility on the PA/NY border. Grateful that for the first time in my life she will live close but sad it's under these circumstances.

I saw this in passing and it struck a chord..... It was once one of the biggest restaurants in America, it was located in Sheepshead Bay --- and it was called Lundy's.....

I remember going to this restaurant in its original splendor only once for a family event, but that was during my Brooklyn College days or very soon afterwards. The original Lundy's closed in 1979.

It was reopened at the same location during the mid-1990s and made a go of it until about 2007. I ate there many times after the reopening.

The glorious B & W shot was taken in 1958, but it only shows a small portion of the size of the place. The color photo is much more recent, and it gives a better impression of the magnitude of the original restaurant.

Here is an interesting sidelight item from one of our regular followers of the news and and not-so-news(y) stuff about the BC Newman daze and people. It's from the Meta-FB feed from Kathy Rogan Hurley.... It struck a chord with me, because over the last few years (during and since COVID) I renewed my acquaintenceship with some of my circle of friends from grammar-school and high school -- much like Kathy R-H. Here's what she had to say:

Kathy Rogan Hurley updated her profile picture... Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 10:47 AM... Happy Birthday week to my (grammar school) BFF, Virginia!!!From serving as Mother Noel's joint Librarians in the corner of that crowded classroom, to nonworking cameras and other crazy projects, through the years of Jr. CDA meetings, you made our time at SCA fun. I always regretted losing touch with you as our paths diverged in high school and beyond. So glad we reconnected after all these years! Hope we can share many more memories! (w/ imogi)..."

This is one of the most difficult postings that I have done --- but I think those who know Jacquie, or knew her from those days back at Newman, would want to know.....

This is a re-post of something posted earlier today from somebody in the family helping to take care of Jacquie:

"... Bree Bailey is with Jacquie Hegsted Jansky... As a lot of you know, my aunt Jacquie took a fall earlier this year and has been in rehab in Pittsburgh, PA since. What has not been shared is that she has been struggling with Dementia. There are moments of clarity and then moments of panic. My dad was with her today and got her cell phone back in working order. Some of her texts, posts, or conversations may not make sense. We promise she is safe and not being harmed.... Family are working hard to get her relocated to NY so we can visit and do more for her care. We apologize for not updating sooner, we were unsure how things would progress. I also just had my first child so it's been a little hectic. While this is in no way a post I wanted to make or felt was mine to share, I fear that her texts or confused conversations will begin to alarm those who care about her.... We appreciate everyone's love, support, and understanding at this time. I will update when there is any change...."

This does look like it's a pretty tough go for Jacquie; however she is not alone among our brother and sister BC Newman Alums in having to go down this particular path.

Jacquie and the others do need your thougts and prayers.....

EXTRA ! EXTRA !!! EXTRA !!!!!

Read all about it.....

About a week or so back, I received a message through this site's message feature from Marguerite Durkin, who I thought had been President of the Brooklyn College Newman Association before Rosemary Neri [now Villanella]; however, the text of the E-mail below shows that my memory of that was faulty..... The long and the short of it was that, thanks to Marguerite Durkin, the earliest BC Newman group yet has provided us with one more link in/for our nostalgia chain to our collective BC Newman Association and Club memories of moments and people during, from and for the 1960s and 70's [and a little of what's gone on eith those folks between then and now].....

There was a photo and an E-mail message from Marguerite D, which I'm pretty much posting whole.....

Here's what Marguerite wrote [with slight editing indicted in backets]:

"... This photo was taken at a reunion of Newman friends who attended Brooklyn College between 1961-67. From left to right: John Lockwood (President of “Night Newman”), Father Tom [D'Albro} ( ‘66 President), Bob Basci, Nancy Melucci-McInerney (VP, 65-67) Marguerite Durkin Lockwood (me), Peter Amato ( d. 2023), Pauline Scala, and Father Tom’s sister.... We were fortunate to be at Brooklyn College shortly after the diocese had purchased the Newman Center Building. At that time there was “Day Newman, “ aka the Newman Student Association, and “Night Newman” aka the Newman Club. Father O’Sullivan tried to get Night Newman to embrace the Student Association title but was unsuccessful, and there always a bit of friendly rivalry between the two groups. But we always came together for community outreach such as the annual Christmas party for the youngsters from Brownsville (John made a heck of a Santa Claus). Those really were the good ole days…"

Here's a latter day view of Mr. Grillo --- not very long ago.....

Here John is giving us all by living it out in his own life >>> new horizons on the 23rd Psalm.....

I don't know --- maybe it's a funky, rainy Saturday morning thing --- and maybe it's just me.....
.. But, doesn't this snapshot of John Grillo in the late '60s or early 70s give off a sort Bob Marley vibe ???

Just look and compare --- maybe squint a little --- see what you think.....

In 1980, this young miss and her sister helped me put up posters and do other stuff when I ran for the State Senate..... I wish that I would have returned the favor in one of her races Upstate and state-wide that have happened since then..... Here's something from one of Teri Reilly Portelli's campaigns --- a little while back, no later than 2013 or so.....

Here is a wonderful generational pic that was posted on the Mary Langro... page back in early June (sorry we were so slow on the uptake.....).

That is especially true because so many of our BC Newman Alums posted their "Likes" on Mary's site; and we just love seeing so many happy sports fans all together, both out on the pitch and in the stands rooting them on.....
