Alright, friends, it’s time for a weekend roundup! We hit the ground running (or at least walking…a lot) and have already packed in a ton of exploration, fun, and ministry! Description of photos in this post:
1-3: Friday was spent walking around exploring our neighborhood, which is beautiful and tree lined with lots of cute shops and restaurants. The lack of air flow in our room called for buying a fan, which AC dutifully lugged home from Target. As a very special treat, that afternoon we gathered with a few hundred of our closest friends in front of the Richard Rodgers theater for Ham4Ham, a 15 minute medley of some of Broadway’s best and brightest performing a handful of songs from their shows. As theatre lovers, we were ecstatic to be there.
4-6: Saturday was our first day serving with ! We helped with some organizational tasks in the building before assembling lunch bags to pass out to people in need of a meal in nearby Tompkins Square Park. We enjoyed our first NYC hot dog from a local hole-in-the-wall and spent the evening at a friend’s rooftop to watch the sunset and have good conversation.
7-10: Sunday morning, we attempted to get a treat from the HUGE Starbucks in our neighborhood, one of their few Reserve Roasteries, before church, but it was extremely busy, so we opted for the quieter, “regular” Starbucks down the street. A stuck train still managed to make us a bit late. 😬 but we still had an epic afternoon helping Graffiti members hand out water and fliers at Loisaida Festival, a big celebration of Latin culture that shut down several blocks near Graffiti. We got to try arepas (a corn cake stuffed with cheese), empanadas, and chicken kebabs. After some recharge time at our accommodations, we had our first taste of New York pizza, which we enjoyed on a bench in the sun at Chelsea Piers.
We are working on getting an email list going for anyone who doesn’t have social media and/or wants more details and specific prayer requests each week. Stay tuned for that, thanks for following along!!
