Happy Caturday! Baby Cat is here to remind you that scars--whether they're physical, mental, or spiritual--are... normal. It can take us a while to build up the courage to look at our scars, and even more time to talk about them. But there's much more to each of us than the scars we carry, and the people (and the God!) who love us see that clearly.

Hooey (get it? get it?!) and his human (Mary Brown) gave the sermon at Rayne last Sunday, unpacking the multitude of ways God sees us as a WHO, not a WHAT.

For example: What am I? I am a mom. A certified millennial. A scout leader. But who am I? That's a really different question... I am a 38-year-old who identifies as a cheerful pessimist, who gets really bummed when people put one another down rather than building one another up, who hates having idle hands, who worries I'll get lost when I drive to new places, and who compulsively eats gummy bears when I am doing my best work. And honestly, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

What are you? WHO are you? And thank God for a God who loves us enough to distinguish between the two!

Stop me if you've heard this one....

But seriously. The joke is humorous in large part because it's true. God's perspective is rarely (if ever) the same as ours, and so patience is hard for us. But growth of any kind can't be rushed. As humans we hate to compromise on our own plans, shift our own timelines, or let go of things not meant for us. But when we do, when we can appreciate that God's perspective on our lives is better informed than our own, patience becomes a little easier.

Sometimes, when God blesses you, it's in the most subtle way. Like you're meant to embark on a scavenger hunt to find the good. Sometimes, God just wallops you upside the head and dares you deny the magnitude of what's before you.

GiveNOLADay was that wallop upside the head for us. We have many gifts and graces, but fundraising isn't (yet... maybe...?) one of them. And then, one month ago, Wayne and Charlene Babovich came out of the woodwork to help us chart a path forward. Board members appealed to family and friends for financial support. Volunteers tabled at area churches to share Silence Broken's message. And then came old friends (Claudia Barker) and new friends to help us take our message public on local and regional radio and TV news.

And by the end of the day on Tuesday, our community's generous gift of time, talents, and treasure helped us raise more than $15,000. (To give you some context, our operating budget in 2025 was about $30,000. So those funds are going to do some heavy lifting!)

Whether you volunteered, fundraised, or donated, words can't express our gratitude. Thank you for making our work possible, thank you for believing in us, and thank you for reminding survivors that they are seen and valued.

All our love,
Mary and Erica

Breaking the silence around child sexual abuse is among the first and most essential steps to cultivating a faith community in which survivors can feel safe and valued. Thank you for your support and your work, Pastor Leigh Rachal!

Happy Caturday! Baby Cat is here to remind us that patience isn't just a virtue... it's a skill we cultivate. It's hard, when you're ready to skip the healing stage and jump right to "healed." It's hard, when you see injustice in the world and can't right it. It's hard, when you lack opposable thumbs and your humans are 2.38 seconds late with your breakfast.

But, fortunately, we humans have significantly more capable prefrontal cortexes than Baby Cat does. We can set bite-sized goals for progress, reason out a way forward, and show ourselves love and grace when we get impatient. And if God cares about Baby Cat and her breakfast, just imagine how much God loves us and wants us to be whole. ❤️
