Join us THIS FRIDAY for a tour of St. Roch Cemetery, one of New Orleans’ most fascinating hidden historic sites. ⚜️🪦

Modeled after the Camp Santo dei Tedeschi near St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, St. Roch Cemetery was designed by Father Peter Leonard Thevis himself, who sketched the plans and helped build it alongside his parishioners before its dedication in 1875.

Father Thevis left an incredible mark on New Orleans, overseeing the construction of schools, convents, and community spaces throughout the Faubourg Marigny—and after decades of service, he was laid to rest inside the very chapel he helped build with his own hands.

Discover the history, architecture, and stories that make St. Roch unlike anywhere else in the city. Tour with us June 5th to experience this remarkable place for yourself.

Meet Our Guide: Melissa Hall

Melissa Hall has a lifelong love for the rich history and culture of New Orleans. Before retiring from a career as a respiratory therapist, she would spend her free time walking in the city’s many cemeteries, curious about the tombs and the people who were laid to rest in them. This curiosity led her to become a tour guide for Save Our Cemeteries. Melissa’s tours offer a window into the lives, legacies and lasting impact of those who made New Orleans what it is today.

"What a wonderful experience! Our tour guide Dana was full of knowledge, we had a lovely time walking around and learning about different tombs. It was especially exciting to go into the chapel and learn about Saint Roch and all the people who still leave offering to this day!"

One of the most unique experiences in New Orleans happens just once a month.

The St. Roch Chapel is only open to the public on the first Friday of each month, making this one of the rarest cemetery tours in the city.

Join us on Friday, June 5 at 10 a.m. for this special tour of St. Roch Cemetery and Chapel. Learn the remarkable story of Rev. Peter Thevis, the devotion to St. Roch, and the traditions that continue more than 150 years later.

Don't miss your chance to step inside this fascinating and rarely accessible sacred space.

“Here it is, your moment of Zen.” ✨

Take a quiet moment to enjoy the newly restored roof and fully functioning scupper on the historic German Presbyterian Society Tomb in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. Watching water finally flow the way it was intended is deeply satisfying — and a reminder that preservation is often found in the smallest details.

Special thanks to the incredible preservation teams making this work possible, including Michelle Duhon with Bayou Preservation and the restoration crew at NOLA Cemetery Renewal. Their craftsmanship helps protect these irreplaceable historic tombs for generations to come. 🪦💧
