We are having tech problems this evening and are unable to stream Evening Prayer, but you and your intentions are in our prayers.
Tomorrow we will be on retreat; no stream then, either.

We started the month of June with the early martyr St. Justin, a philosopher who gave us our earliest description of the Mass (circa 150 A.D.!) and was executed in 165 by the Roman government for being a Christian. The next day, the Church honored Sts. Marcellinus (priest) and Peter (exorcist), also martyred by Rome (and in Rome) just 135 years after Justin. Then, on June 3 (yes, the next day), we honored the large group of Ugandan martyrs, put to death in the late 1800's for their faithfulness to Christ and the demands of Gospel living.
And today we come to St. Boniface, the father of the Christmas tree. He was a Benedictine monk, tasked with evangelizing the area we today think of as Germany (or Germanic). Boniface was actually British, but had a missionary heart. The Pope gave him full authority to preach in northern Europe. Boniface was also very astute politically. In a very real way, European identity owes as much to Boniface as to his protege's descendent, Charlemagne.
Surrounded by this crowd of witnesses, may we correspond to the grace of faith as they did!

Here in New Orleans, all the parishes will be making a Holy Hour tomorrow evening. Sister Anne will be leading the Holy Hour at Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Lacombe, LA. She adapted the Adoration guides from her book (Come to Me: Living the Nine First Fridays), and prepared them for download.

With so many trouble spots around the world, with daily news of wars and epidemics and violence, it is good to take time to turn our minds and hearts away from the chaos and toward the God of goodness, and beauty, and truth, and peace. Evening Prayer allows us to end the workday on a note of trustful gratitude.

Today we begin the month of the Sacred Heart in an especially significant year for U.S. Catholics. We not only celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence; in just two weeks, the entire United States will be consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Here in New Orleans, the Archbishop will consecrate the Archdiocese to the Sacred Heart, and is providing frame-worthy images of Jesus to encourage every single family to "enthrone" Jesus within the home.
June also marks the beginning of the sisters' retreat season, so you will see a lot of change in the makeup of the community between now and the end of August. Be sure that wherever they are, the sisters are praying for you and the intentions you post here.
Evening Prayer is streamed from the bookstore chapel of the Daughters of St. Paul in Metairie, Louisiana.

Today we celebrate the deepest truth of our faith, and the most mysterious. Through a long, slow process of revelation, God gradually shared with us the hidden secret of the divine life: a life of unity (one, and only one God) in absolute communion (of Three divine Persons). God has always been Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, united in one divine nature, and yet with relationships of perfect self-giving love. This is what it means for us to be created "in the image and likeness of God": we are made for communion, and a communion that is best expressed in sincere and complete self-giving. Since we, however, are not divine, we need God's life of grace to make it possible for us to live that divinely!
Today, let yourself marvel at the fact that God chose to reveal his inner life to us, and pray for the grace to live it "on earth as it is in Heaven."

Why Love Is the Key to Everything (Jn 3:16-18)

“For God so loved the world....” (Jn 3:16) Love is the key to understanding God. And love is the key to becoming truly who we were created out of love to be. On the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we speak about the deepest truth of God’s identity: a God who is Love (see 1 Jn 4:8), who, because of his great love for us, brought us to life in Christ (see Eph 2:4-5)....
