A WARNING ABOUT ONLINE CHURCH
I keep hearing Christians say, “I gave up on local churches. I found a church online that I like better.”
You may have found a preacher you enjoy. You may have found sound teaching. You may have found a ministry that has helped you deeply. Thank God for it.
But watching a service is not the same as assembling with the saints.
The Bible says:
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25
The early believers continued in doctrine, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer. They shared burdens. They served one another. They prayed for the sick. They submitted to godly leadership. They became a functioning body, with every member supplying something the others needed. (Acts 2:42; Galatians 6:2; James 5:14; Hebrews 13:17; Ephesians 4:11–16.)
A livestream can preach to you, but it cannot fully pastor you.
It cannot notice when you disappear.
It cannot sit beside your family in the hospital.
It cannot look you in the eyes and ask the hard questions.
It cannot give you people to forgive, encourage, serve, and love.
It cannot replace corporate prayer, the Lord’s Table, the laying on of hands, spiritual accountability, or the strength that comes from standing shoulder to shoulder with other believers.
The local church joins us to a spiritual family where we are known, corrected, encouraged, equipped, and sent.
Some say, “I was hurt by the church.”
I believe you. Church wounds can cut deeply. Take time to heal. Establish wise boundaries. Find mature counsel. Search for a healthy congregation. But do not allow someone else’s failure to turn your pain into a theology of isolation. You weren’t made to do life without church.
Others say, “Every church has problems.”
Of course it does. Every church is filled with imperfect people, and you will be one of them. Christian maturity requires patience, forgiveness, humility, faithfulness, and the willingness to work through conflict. The struggle with the imperfections in church is part of the benefit of church.
"I get fed better online.”
Church is also where you learn to feed others. It’s not all about you. You are needed in the local assembly. You carry gifts someone else needs. There are people who need your prayers, your encouragement, your testimony, your generosity, and your presence. The body suffers when its members choose observation over participation.
Online ministry is a tremendous blessing for the sick, the homebound, the traveling, the persecuted, and those who have no faithful church within reach. If you don't have a good local church, it may be time to move. Being a part of the Body of Christ in a local church is that important.
Find a church where Christ is preached, Scripture is honored, and the Holy Spirit is welcomed.
Then join it.
Serve.
Give.
Pray.
Build relationships.
When persecution comes, YouTube will not visit you in prison. Your television will not lay hands on you. Your favorite online preacher may never know your name.
You will need believers who know your family, recognize your voice, understand your weaknesses, and will stand beside you when standing costs something.
Build those relationships now.
Come out of isolation.
Come back to the assembly.
The church needs you, and you need the church.
