Two of our team members from the Center for Pastoral Health had the opportunity to attend a retreat at Serra Retreat Center in Malibu, California last week to learn more about Emotional Intelligence and how it relates to the work we do with pastors. We are so thankful for the Lilly Endowment Fund and their generosity to fund these experiences. Pastor Carmen Russell (co-coordinator of The Thriving Initiative) and Dr. Jay Earles (Director for CPH) were especially thankful for the time to dream about where God is leading us in this new season for TTI. It was so fun to be with our Southeast NYI family this weekend at TNT@TNU. While there we did some two question interviews with pastors. We asked 1. What is the hardest thing about ministry and 2. What is the best thing about ministry. It was amazing how so many of their answers were similar. A good reminder that we are not alone in this journey we call ministry. We are excited to partner with the Southeast Field and Trevecca for PALCON this summer. Make plans to attend this awesome conference designed specifically for pastors and leaders in the church. The heart of The Thriving Initiative is the mentoring cohort.

Each cohort brings together a small group of pastors in similar seasons of ministry and pairs them with experienced mentor pastors who can offer encouragement, wisdom, and support.

The journey begins with The Gathering Retreat on August 28–30 at Foothills Camp and Retreat Center where pastors will spend time building relationships, worshiping together, learning, and being encouraged.

From there, cohorts will meet monthly on Zoom throughout the year for honest conversations, mentoring, and support.

The experience concludes with a closing retreat in May 2027.

Many pastors have heard the phrase “spiritual direction” but are not exactly sure what it means.

Spiritual direction offers a chance to step back, ask deeper questions, and remember that God is still present in the middle of ministry, stress, and uncertainty.

Sometimes pastors need someone to care for their soul too.

One of the best things a pastor can do is build a support system before a crisis comes. Healthy ministry is not built alone.

Most pastors do not need another leadership book. They need people.

They need mentors who understand. They need peers who can relate. They need healthy rhythms that keep them grounded.

The Thriving Initiative exists to provide the support pastors need to stay healthy and serve faithfully for the long haul.

We are so grateful! Because of your generosity on Trevecca’s Giving Day, The Thriving Initiative raised $3,985 from 45 donors.

That number represents more than dollars. It represents pastors who will be supported, encouraged, and reminded that they are not alone in ministry. It represents relationships that will be built, wisdom that will be shared, and lives that will be strengthened for the long haul.

Thank you for believing in this work. Thank you for investing in pastors. Thank you for helping create space for ministry leaders to not just survive, but truly thrive.
