According to Jesus, there is ONE sin a person can commit for which there is no forgiveness:
—Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
But what does it mean ?
To put it simply, it is a continuation of wrongdoing. So much that one becomes numb to conviction, which then can lead to an unclean Spirit.
This isn't something that someone can commit randomly. It isn't a matter of a sudden thoughtless word or an instant reaction. Even the Scribes (Pharisees) from Jerusalem didn’t commit this unforgivable sin in a spur of the moment.
Throughout the book of Mark you’ll read the progression to the Scribes unbelief. In the beginning they too were just as curious as everyone was about Jesus and His teachings, they had questions, but in time they grew indifferent and that indifference marinated into a maliciousness that became so hateful & vengeful that it ultimately nailed Jesus to the cross.
Jesus addresses the topic of:
"the unforgivable"
"Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation” Mark 3:28
Jesus gave this teaching because His opponents were accusing Him of having an unclean Spirit. Our Lord said to them, “There is a sin that you are on the verge of committing. You should be very careful, because you are about to do something for which there is no forgiveness.”
When God convicts us of sin, it is dangerous to neglect it. Especially when our procrastination becomes so persistent that we resist and resist until after a while.. we become hard-hearted and sin-hardened so much that we grow a numbness within the soul. Our ears can’t receive truth. Our minds shake off conviction and we become cynical of conscience. And athough the grace of God is still available... we push it further... and further away from us.
This was such a tragedy for these Scribes because they devoted their whole lives to copying the Word of God. These men copied and recopied the Old Testament so much that they should have been Jesus' biggest supporters. Every day they copied ancient Scriptures, scroll by scroll, in their own hand. They copied Isaiah 53, about the Suffering Servant. They copied Psalm 22, about the death of the Messiah. They knew Micah 5 and the prophecy of our Lord’s birth. Yet their hearts had became so hardened they couldn’t see God's grace when it arrived in the form of Jesus.
So be careful, because we too can go to church and read the Bible so much that the words no longer register within us. The Scribes were so familiar with religious things that when the Son of God showed up, they didn’t know who He was! They accused Him of being from Satan!
By ascribing the miracles of Jesus to Satan, these religious leaders were committing the unforgivable sin —Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit— by denying the deity of Jesus Christ. They said He could not be God. And yet, by His miracles.. He showed Himself to be nothing less than God.
So in essence, the unforgivable sin is hardening your heart against God by repeatedly refusing to respond to His entreaties into thy heart. When one continues to resist and reject the Lord, they build a callus so thick on their soul that the conviction of the Spirit of God will no longer register within us. You hear the Word of God and it makes no impact on you. If you die in that condition, there’s no further forgiveness that can be had in this world or the next.
The thought of an unforgivable sin has haunted me throughout my life, and maybe it has yours too, but I do know this —if we are bothered in our heart that we have committed this great sin that God will not forgive, the very fact that you have anxiety over it is evidence enough that you have not.
