We are beginning week 3 in Western NC. The storm has ravaged communities, taken countless lives, and caused billions of dollars in damage. This will take months to restore anything close to normal.
If you’re asking what can I do, I will give you a few ideas.
1. Pray- For the individuals here and every family involved. No one is untouched here
2. Plan for long term help/aid. Your donations are very generous and are a lifeline in these communities. These people are different than any other group I’ve seen, ever in an emergency situation. We have to practically beg them to take more than just a few items. By far the most humble people I’ve ever met.
3. As we enter week 3, most gas stations in the area are up and running, very limited hours, but they are open. Fuel is mostly cash only (we have moved north into Mitchell County). Which means we have to have cash to buy the fuel we are supplying with your donations. Each generator runs on about $15 dollars with of gas (5 gallons) for about 6 hours.
One of the last installs we did today just before dark was for a 91 year old lady who has lived in the same house for 60 years. She is on oxygen full time and today 17 days into this just has power from generator to use her concentrator to make the oxygen. She is under hospice care but you can imagine the struggle it has been to care for her.
We have so many stories, but out of respect for these beautiful people I will not exploit their suffering by manipulating you with pictures. I just don’t believe it’s fair or right.
I’m praying each of you who read this will hear from Holy Spirit and He will guide you hearts. When you drive thru a fast food place or Starbucks etc, order light and save a few dollars and designate that for these folks.
$15 dollars x 4 cycles a day is $60. We are servicing (delivering gas and or propane) to 53 families or families. Some are so very hard to reach. Power is being restored but it is a slow process, you just can’t imagine the damage. It is a short term expense, how short I’m not sure.
This recovery is going to be taxing on the folks here. For them this is as real as it gets, what we call missions, is their real recovery. Everyone here has lost someone they know.
I know money is tight for everyone these days, but if you have the means to support our efforts to just a small portion of the affected area, please continue or consider doing so.
We have met workers from Texas, Arizona, Arkansas, and parts in between. Our 6.5 hour drive is nothing. It will be in the Low 30’s every night this week. Highs in the 50’s. We unloaded 50 kerosene heaters tonight. Again another fuel cost for folks who haven’t worked in over 2 weeks.
I’m not the savior of the world, but I serve Him. The men with me this week are Daniel Ivan Richardson and Trey O'Hara. They are giving up family and jobs to help. They both along with Phil Dieser have worked tirelessly to get these folks water and power with the generators.
Please consider donating to help us supply fuel and prayerfully more generators and heaters this week.
