AMERICAN FLAG ETIQUETTE
By Gloria Ames/American Legion Auxiliary Post 9
This was published in the Winona Daily News on April 17th, 2003.
Since that awful day in September of 2001, we have seen resurgence in the numbers of Americans flying the American flag. Many of these people are displaying the flag improperly. They mean well. Please, take caution on how you approach this situation; no one likes to be told that they are doing something wrong when there heart is in it. I know it's not an easy thing to do.
According to the National Flag Foundation they feel it is more important to fly the American Flag than it is to follow the rules precisely in these times.
I feel we should just touch on the more important items of flag etiquette as a reminder.
-It is acceptable to wear a T-shirt or similar item with a flag motif. An actual flag should not be worn, unless on a uniform like a Color Guard shoulder patch. Flags are also unacceptable on pants, beach towels, or other items that may be sat or stepped on.
-If hung vertically, the blue field should be at the top left from the observer's perspective.
-The flag should never be used for advertising purposes.
-It should not be printed on anything to be discarded, such as napkins, boxes, etc.
-The American flag should never be used as a banner; therefore, autographing, printing names, or the writing of messages of any kind on the flag is defacing the flag.
