HUNGER FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS

“If, as the Psalmist says, a man has truly tasted the Lord; that is, if he has received God into Himself, he is filled with Him for whom he has hungered and thirsted, as He promised Who said: ‘I and the Father will come and will make our abode with him’ (the Holy Spirit of course had already been dwelling there before). I suppose the great Paul, too, who had tasted of those ineffable fruits from Paradise, was at the same time full of what he had tasted and always hungering for it. For he owned that he has been filled with what he desired when he says, ‘Christ liveth in me’, yet he is still hungry, for he always stretches out to the things before him, saying, ‘Not as though I had already attained, or were already perfect, but I run that I may apprehend’.”

FIX YOUR ATTENTION ON THE HIGHEST

Every impulse or emotion connected with the passions resides in life below, where the human nature is at home. Therefore, the Divinely inspired Word fixes the attention on the heavenly city, the dwelling place of holy powers, which is perfectly free from even the slightest stain of sin and evil.

-St Gregory of Nyssa, Homily Three on the Lord’s Prayer

The true Physician of the diseases of the soul, who shared the life of man for the sake of those who were sick, gradually weakens the cause of disease through the thoughts contained in the prayer (thy will be done) and so restores us to spiritual health.

-St Gregory of Nyssa, Homily Three on the Lord’s Prayer

God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.
God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.
The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.

A most blessed Ascension to all!

. . . constantly call: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me!” in order that this remembrance of the Name of our Lord Jesus should incite you to battle with the enemy. By this remembrance, a soul forcing itself to do with this practice can discover everything which is within, both good and bad. This remembrance is for rousing the serpent and for subduing it. This remembrance can reveal sin living in us and can destroy it. This remembrance can rouse all the enemy hosts in the heart, and little by little can conquer and uproot them.

The Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, descending into the depths of the heart, will subdue the serpent holding sway over the pastures of the heart, and will save our soul and bring it to life. Thus abide constantly with the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that the heart swallows the Lord and the Lord the heart, and the two become one. But this is not done in one or two days; it needs many years and a long time.

For nothing is so magnificent to God as pure teaching and a soul that has been perfected in the doctrines of truth. -St. Gregory Nazianzen

BE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out! For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be ye not confirmed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.

Romans 11:33,36; 12:1-2

CHRIST THE FOUNTAINHEAD OF BEAUTY

Anyone who gazes upon the visible universe and sees the wisdom that has been impressed upon the beauty of all creatures, can argue from the visible to the invisible beauty, the fountainhead of all Wisdom, Whose influence brought all creatures into being. So too, anyone who looks upon the universe of this new creation reflected in the Church, can see in it Him Who is all in all, and thus through things that are intelligible and understandable he may be led by our faith to an awareness of the Transcendent.

And so these maidens request the soul who is rising up towards perfection to reveal her Beloved to them; and she paints a picture of her love in terms of the mysteries of salvation.
