I am elated to finally be coming IN PESON to Memphis IY”H this weekend for a series of shiurim and programs. I wanted to share with you a little bit of the more mikvah-related parts of the program.
• Motzei Shabbat at Yafit Fishbach and Asher Rosen at 8:30, 217 Green Glade RD. We’ll be serving Zach’s pizza so please RSVP to Yafit at 718 791 9003. I am going to be talking about how our perspective and even practice of mikva has shifted in the past few months. We make a lot of changes during Covid, reacting to the immediate situation – in halacha, policy, personal practice. Some of those are changes that very well will stick with us – we will look at the halachic underpinnings and how we can come out of all this with a better halachic and hashkafic approach to hilchot niddah. For women only.
• Sunday morning at the shul, 9 AM. Building a state-of-the art mikva is a one in a generation experience for a community. Dr. Noam Davidovics, who is studying for Smicha, and I will give brief shiurim that look at different halachic aspects of mikvah construction that speak to fundamental Jewish values. A light breakfast and coffee bar will be complemented by a walk through of the new mikvah by Chana Dina Goldblatt, who was heavily involved in creating the “feel” of the new mikvah. For men and women.
We would love to see you come out for these programs, as well as the shiurim taking place over Shabbat!! (Friday night Oneg at the home of Lindi & Ari VanderWalde, Shabbat morning Drasha, Shabbat afternoon class at 5:15)

The balanit for the week of July 11 - 17 is Abbe Kaplan.
Mrs. Abbe Kaplan is a nearly life-long Memphian, the daughter of a beloved past Rabbi of Baron Hirsch, and continuously active and passionate member of the Orthodox community. She has served on numerous boards across the Jewish community. She is the mother of 4 children-3 of whom have begun their families in Israel and one in Memphis (the other holy land). She is an inspiration to many, always making time to learn Torah and do chesed in the community-most famously for making cholent for weekly kiddush. She finds the mitzvah of taharat hamishpacha to be a "beautifully spiritual mitzvah." Thank you for your commitment to ensuring others find the beauty in this mitzvah as well.

Mrs. Katz is a long-time volunteer in the Memphis community. Most of the Jewish organizations in town have benefited from her time, graciousness, understanding of Jewish practice and humility. Esther (and her husband, Allan) have been the backbone of the of the Orthodox community's growth and involvement in greater Jewish Memphis. She has been a reliable and regular baalanit, even during these stressful times. Her legacy continues as the matriarch of the Katz family, now with 4 generations living and performing their own chesed in our community. We are grateful for her leadership and stature as a role model for volunteerism and chesed in our community.
