The North Mississippi Conference Lay Organization Annual Lay Convention was held on October 4-5, 2024, at New Jeremiah AME Church, Southaven, MS. The Opening Worship Service was Friday, October 4th @ 7:00pm; Theme: The Four Gospel Writers: Rev. Johnny Johnson, Sr. (Matthew), Rev. Jimmy Harper (Mark), Rev. Phonecia Witherspoon (Luke) and Rev. Gwendolyn Pitts (John) with Rev. Reginald Guy giving the Summation. If you were not there, you missed a great time in the Lord!
The following morning, Saturday, we started with registration following business and training. Sister Jennifer Otis presented, and outstanding workshop entitled "Yes We Can!". She encouraged voter participation and how important it is to vote. This workshop engaged great participation, valuable information and lengthy discussion from everyone.
Our Annual Awards Luncheon, where we recognized outstanding laypersons of the Year: Sister Eunice Sanders, and Sister Jerri Evans. Sisters Charlotte Neely and Ethel Garner were awarded Lifetime Membership in the organization. President McClain presented the Executive Board members with a plague for their excellent work in their various leadership roles.
Mrs. Cloteal Fitzpatrick, Founder and Director of The O. B. McClinton Foundation was our speaker on Community Awareness. She shared with us her passion for children and how important it is that we keep them in the forefront of our lives. Education is not only taught in schools; it is a 24/7 curriculum. She has a free Summer Enrichment Program every year during the summer months to help the kids with, math, reading, recreational activities, just to name a few, while school is not in session.
Although we lack in attendance, God had the people He wanted there. We have got to re-emphasize the importance of the Lay Organization.
As we end this Conference Year and begin a new, we must position ourselves to become better disciples, doing what God has commissioned us to do. We must focus on the true meaning of the "Great Commission" and let us not make it the "Great Omission" in our journey of kingdom building.
To God be the Glory for the Good Things He has done and will continue to do in The North Mississippi Conference Lay Organization.
