Today we did the Vatican Museum and Saint Peter's Basilica. There was a technical delay in transferring photos today, so these will be uploaded tomorrow. Check out the photos from John Canter and Buckner Hasenmueller for some of today's best.

Rain, all day, RAIN! With damp hair but undampened spirits, we slogged through the soggy streets and alleyways of this bustling city. After cramming onto a city bus, (by the way, we now know how a sardine feels, except we were alive and not covered with olive oil,) we stopped outside the Area Sacra. This is a fairly recent excavation that contained three separate temples AND the Roman Senate. This was particularly poignant, as we are very near the Ides of March, and we got to see where Julius Caesar was murdered.

Our next stop was the Basilica of Saint Mary Over Minerva, a church that was built on top of a roman temple. We were able to see yet another sculpture by Michelangelo, as well as the body, (sans head,) of Catherine of Siena. We stepped out of the Basilica to see the rear of the Pantheon. We walked around front and in. A video of the interior will be posted when we return to the land of high-speed internet.

After the Pantheon, we went over to the Church of Saint Louis of France. There we saw three paintings by Caravaggio depicting events in the life of Saint Matthew. We then went to the Piazza Navona and gazed at a fountain by Bergnini, continued to the flower market and ate lunch.

After lunch we caught a bus to the Colosseum, where we met a local guide who led us through the Colosseum and Forum. The rain was falling very heavily as we wrapped up our two-hour tour of these Ancient Roman Ruins. Soaked and exhausted, we trudged over twenty minutes through the Roman traffic to return to our hotel to convalesce until dinner.

Oh, and a new Pope was elected during our dinnertime.

Most of today was consumed with travel, and we still got to do cool stuff. We visited the Catacombs of Saint Callisto, and unfortunately for some, the photographer for this page had recalibrated his or her moral compass prior to the visit, and chose to refrain from surreptitiously snapping photos in the tombs. One may, however find photos from the visit on the pages of others. Before we went to the Hotel, we stopped and visited an ancient fortress and the Chiesa del "Domine quo Vadis," "Lord, where are You going?"

After settling in at our hotel, and waiting out a 1-hour rain/hail/thunderstorm delay, we set out for the Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli, the Basilica of Saint Peter in Chains. We attempted to finish up at Saint Paul's Within the Walls, an American Episcopal Church inside the the ancient Roman walls, but er arrived 5 minutes past closing. Maybe tomorrow...

Today was spent exclusively in Assisi. It was chilly, and rain brought an end to our outdoor explorations around 2pm. However, before then, we were able to walk through the ancient medieval town and visit the Basilica di Santa Chiara and the Basilica di San Francesco. Both of them enormous churches constructed in the 13th century, and with the inside walls and ceilings covered with frescoes. In the 700+ years since their construction, both buildings have been damaged multiple times by earthquakes, most recently in 1997, as well as undergone several "renovations." There may, or may not, be some photos in this album that were surreptitiously snapped by a non-rule following photographer... may the Saints forgive him, or her. After saying farewell to our guide, we enjoyed lunch at a local establishment, and then set out to storm the Bishop's Palace, way, WAY up on a hill. Later, the rain having driven us inside, we visited a museum of the remains of an ancient Roman Forum found underneath the city after the 1997 quake.

We finished our time in Florence with a trip to Saint James Episcopal Church, where we celebrated Eucharist. We then went to the Piazza del Michelangelo for a final view of Florence. We arrived in Siena in time for lunch and some free exploration around the Piazza del Campo, where, as luck would have it, the was a regional Chocolate Festival taking place. It being a Sunday, we bodaciously availed ourselves of the beautiful and tasty treats. We were then treated to a guided walking-tour of the city of Siena, including the Duomo of Siena, Piazza del Santa Caterina, and the Basilica San Dominica. It was a long and glorious day, and we were tired!

We had a FULL day. Lots of walking and wonders.

We were blessed to be present during Noonday Prayers at the Duomo in Milano

03/09/2013

Today, we went to the Academy and saw, among other things, Michelangelo's David. AMAZING! After that we visited the Duomo (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flowers.) It is called Duomo, I think, because of the dome. The interior of the dome is covered with frescoes. We were given the option of going up into the dome or climbing the Belltower. There was a Disneyworld-like line for the dome, so we climbed the Belltower, (many, MANY STAIRS,) and took great photos of the city.

After the Duomo, we walked to the city center and crossed the Ponte Vecchio, where we took a lovely group photo. We ate lunch, then proceeded to the Uffizi. This amazing museum housed more famous paintings than I am able to mention. We saw works by Michelangelo, Botticelli, DaVinci, Caravaggio, et al, ad infinitum. After 2-hours in the Uffizi, we took our aching feet to the Piazza del Santa Croce, outside the Basilica of the same name. We spent approximately an hour there, refreshing ourselves by shopping or enjoying a capuccino and pastry at an outdoor cafe. We then walked along the Rio Arno, to return to our hotel and prepare for dinner at a nearby restaurant.
