Exciting new work beginning
Over the past several months, we have been in conversation and prayer, and we are launching the Community of St. Botolph. Our first gathering will be on Sunday, April 19th at 5:30 p.m., and we will meet at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond Street in Hingham. I am especially grateful to Fred Slinger for his generosity in opening this beautiful and sacred space to us.
So, what is the Community of St. Botolph?
We are a threshold community, rooted in the ancient faith of Christ.
We are a wayhouse for pilgrims, seekers, and the spiritually displaced. No matter where you are on life’s journey, you will find a home with us.
We are a place where contemplation and sacrament sustain a faithful life in a changing world. Our worship will be grounded in the rich traditions of the Christian Church, while engaging thoughtfully with the questions and realities of our modern age.
We take our name from St. Botolph of Thorney, a 7th-century monk, abbot, and founder who established a community of prayer and learning on the margins—at the threshold between land and sea, wilderness and settlement. Botolph’s communities became places of hospitality, learning, healing, and refuge for travelers and seekers. Over time, his name came to be associated with crossings, journeys, and safe passage.
And so, in that same spirit, we invite you to come and join us on the journey.
