The Jewish Federation of New Hampshire is deeply disturbed by today’s attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, which also houses a Jewish school and early childhood center.
We are relieved that, according to current reports, no children or congregants appear to have been seriously harmed, though a security officer was injured while protecting the community.
Our hearts are with the congregation of Temple Israel, the students and families connected to the school, and the entire Detroit-area Jewish community. Synagogues and Jewish schools are sacred spaces for prayer, learning, and community. Violence directed at these spaces is an attack on the fundamental right to gather safely in one’s faith.
This moment is also a reminder of how antisemitism expressed online and in public discourse can escalate into real-world violence.
We stand in solidarity with the Michigan Jewish community.
