This week, we remember our first Division Chaplain and namesake - Rev. William J. Shanahan, OMI. Known to friends as "Father Bill," he was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on January 13, 1922. He was ordained at St. Joseph Cathedral in 1950 after graduating from St. Paul's Seminary in Ottawa, Ontario.

Father Shanahan served as pastor in churches throughout New Hampshire, including at St. Joseph Cathedral and St. Francis of Assisi in Manchester. His final assignment was at St. Jude's in Londonderry, where he served until his retirement in 1987, after which he resided at St. John the Evangelist in Hudson until his death on March 27, 1991.

In addition to serving as the first Chaplain of AOH Division 1 in Manchester, Father Bill served in the same capacity for the Sisters of Mercy in Windham, and was also a fourth degree Knight of Columbus.

We are proud to carry his name forward as "Rev. William J. Shanahan Division 1, Manchester, N.H." As we mark the 103rd anniversary of his birth, let us keep the memory of Father Bill alive in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

[Special thanks to Brother Dick Flores for compiling this biographical information about Father Shanahan.]
