Special thanks to those of you who came out to help pick up trash!!! Here is a note from the organizers:
It was a dirty job -- and YOU did it.
Dear Ocean Lovers,
Last Saturday, you were part of something really big -- our 26th annual Coastal Cleanup Day. You should take pride in keeping our special places safe, healthy and clean!
In all, 9,475 volunteers removed 21,310 pounds of trash from local beaches, parks, waterways and neighborhoods, covering 60 miles of territory!
Among the unusual items found, the mayor of Agoura unearthed a wallet that contained $100 at our Medea Creek site in the West Valley, and she vows to try and reunite the owner and the trashy billfold. Other oddball items found by volunteers like you: five .45 bullets (Redondo Beach Pier dive site), a bowling ball (Malaga Cove) and a dead rooster (Arroyo Seco/L.A. River confluence).
The debris you removed has now been categorized and catalogued, which will help better inform our ongoing policy work to curb coastal pollution.
If you're not already a member, we hope you will consider underwriting the type of work we did on Saturday by making a financial contribution to Heal the Bay. Beyond the satisfaction of supporting a beloved L.A. institution, there are several member benefits.
Even a modest donation of $15 will help Heal the Bay offset the costs of our ongoing cleanup programs so we can revitalize and restore our most precious natural resource -- year-round.
Know that however you Heal the Bay -- whether you clean up your local beach, become a member or replace water-thirsty landscaping -- you are a vital part of our community.
We started as an all-volunteer organization, and we still rely heavily on ocean-lovers like you who generously donate their time. Your input is critical. Please send a note to our Beach Programs Manager, Alys Arenas, to share any observations or comments about your experience.
From everyone at Heal the Bay: Thank you.
