“David is a king. He’s the CEO of the nation. He’s the commander-in-chief of the military forces of Israel. Yet they’re all in a desperate place. All around him are powerful enemies and relentless opposition.
And in this desperate place, David lifts his eyes to the Lord. He doesn’t talk to his enemies; he talks to the Lord. And he has just one request to ask of the Lord.
Think about him. He’s a powerful man. He has a lot of contacts. He knows a lot of people. He has a lot of resources at his disposal. So if he has just one request, what do you think he might ask for? Victory over his enemies? An effective battle plan? For God to make his problems go away? A way to escape his problems?
What would you have asked for if you were in his position?
David says:
‘One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire in His temple.’
He says, ‘This is the number one priority of my life.’ This is the one thing he will earnestly seek and pursue, the one thing on which he will focus his efforts and attention.
He’s saying, essentially, ‘Lord, if You don’t give me anything else, please give me this one thing...to live in the presence of the Lord.’”
