"The misconception that Christianity is boring is not new or uncommon. We currently live in a culture where our attention spans are shortening and unfortunately, even within the church, there is an exceeding need for grandiose gestures and anything that will leave us entertained, impressed, and on an emotional high.

There are a few problems with all of this, but I will name two. For one, we are the ones defining terms. We make our definition of what greatness is, what excitement should look like, and what satisfaction should be. Even what being a Christian means. We allow our man-made definitions to rule our emotions and all the while fail to recognize how contrary they are to what Scripture says. Another problem is that our expectations and starvation for constant stimulation leave little room for sustainable faith. How are we to stay faithful and steady when the bar to impress us is constantly being raised? How do we endure the hard, Christian journey when life grows mundane and suffering comes? And how can we possibly offer lasting hope to a lost and watching world with this kind of faith?

As God graciously changed my heart and continues to grow and sanctify me, I am learning that my old perception of what it meant to follow him was a terrible
resemblance to what is true. There is so much splendor in following Jesus. And it all begins with what you perceive to be true."

What we can learn from Rahab about radical hospitality:

1. Rahab's hospitality was fueled by her faith. Her faith was essential in this story. Rahab heard about all that God had done for the Israelites and trusted that the promises he made to his people would come true. Because we have heard and believe in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus— we should be people that cling to his promises as we love and serve those around us.

2. Rahab shows us that hospitality can be costly. She took a huge risk in hiding these spies on her roof. If they were to be discovered, she would have most likely been imprisoned, punished, or killed by the king of Jericho. Following Jesus comes at a cost and often times we are called to do hard and uncomfortable things. The cost of radical hospitality may be small or sometimes big, but always worth it when done for God's glory.

3. The life of Rahab shows us that salvation is for anyone. God is still drawing people to himself —no matter their background. Rahab was a pagan pr******te, but God stilled offered grace and mercy and used her in a radical way.

We are called to show hospitality to both fellow believers and strangers. But how exactly can we model radical hospitality to those we do not know? Here are just a few examples:

- Notice and pay attention to needs that may be around you. Do you see a struggling mom at the store with her kids? Offer to help her or simply lend encouraging words by reassuring her that she's doing a great job. Do you notice someone standing in front of you in line at the coffee shop rummaging to find their wallet? Offer generosity and pay for their coffee. There are endless ways we can serve those we don't know if only we keep our eyes open.

- A smile and kindness go a long way. Engage in present and meaningful conversations when they arise. You never know if you'll leave a convo with a new friend.

- Seek out ways to intentionally use your gifts to serve the needs of your community. Whether it's the local soup kitchen, offering to do chores for the elderly neighbor you haven't gotten to get to know, or simply offering your time to a young girl that may be looking for a mentor.

We seek to display radical hospitality because Jesus has served us in the most radical, life-changing way when he gave his life to set us free.

Romans 12:13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Hebrews 13:2
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

"We are only able to be content with what we have, no matter our circumstances, because we have a Savior who promises to never leave nor forsake us. When dissatisfaction arises and we are tempted to despise the life we have been given, we must remember this steadfast relationship we have with our faithful God.

And as our eyes are fixed on the one truly worthy of all our attention, we begin to discover the endless beauty and never-ending loveliness of the one who is all we need and more. He is of supreme value (Philippians 3:8), our priceless treasure (Matthew 13:44), and ultimate prize (Philippians 3:14). "

Do NOT grow weary of doing good...

Whether it's:

- Showing hospitality by doing the hard, mundane work of discipling your children to follow the ways of the Lord.

- Showing hospitality by completing the tedious, repetitive chores you have to do every day to create a peaceful and hospitable environment in your home.

- Showing hospitality by serving your neighbor without recognition or praise

For in due season, the tiny seeds you plant will grow into beautiful fruit. So don't lose heart, friend!

"The idea that our careers will fulfill us is a fantasy because work was never meant to fill our thirsty souls. Only Christ can do that. So often we get wrapped up in the lie that our work is about us. How much money can I make? Who will report to me? What will my title be? But we have been called to take the lowly seat and abandon a self-serving life, even when the people we work with or for are challenging. We have been given the opportunity to express the nature of Christ despite our circumstances because our work is not about us, it’s about Him. "

Things we can learn about radical hospitality from Rebekah:

1. Rebekah shows us the important significance of small, menial tasks. She simply chose to graciously serve a complete stranger water. This may have seemed insignificant to her at the time, but was obviously important enough to be recorded into Scripture. What we do matters, no matter how small or cumbersome it may seem.

2. Rebekah shows us the value of hard work. She was industrious and not lazy. Not only does she bring water to a stranger she does not know, but she also gathered water for 10 of his camels. This was NO easy task. After a long trek, a camel may drink as much as 40 gallons of water at a time. Ancient springs made into communal wells had steps going down into them in the ancient Near East and she would have had to draw all this water by hand. Water jars back then used by women to gather water typically might have carried 6 gallons. Camels needed 400 gallons of water. So if we were to do some math 400/6= 67 visits up and down stairs to serve CAMELS!

3. Rebekah was WILLING to serve. The text says that she would "quickly empty" her jar and would "run again" to the well. She was EAGER to serve and did so humbly, without complaining or grumbling.

Rebekah was not serving her husband, friend, or some important celebrity. She was doing all of this for a complete stranger. This was her character. May we strive daily to show this type of humble, radical hospitality like Rebekah.

This month, we continue our discussion about radical hospitality. What does it look like to steward our lives for the glory of God by using our home, resources, talents, and passions to serve others and show the love of Christ?

Whatever is in your hands— use it to create beautiful things, to build others up, to serve when it's uncomfortable, to find extraordinary opportunities to love others in the seemingly mundane.

What's your favorite way to show hospitality?

Hospitality doesn't show up in one way. It goes beyond inviting someone into your home or hosting a gathering. It's about creating an experience and atmosphere that says family, friend, or stranger you are welcome...you are loved and accepted.

There is no one more hospitable than Jesus. As believers, we are called to reflect the Father's heart by showing radical hospitality where ever we go--transforming homes, neighborhoods, and communities through the love of Christ.

What is your favorite way to make people feel welcome?

Just because you’re not where you *think* you need to be, doesn’t mean God isn’t working.

You may be frustrated and restless at the pace you feel you are growing, but as you seek to rely on the One who gives new life, HE is faithful to tend to you, care for you, grow you.

And it’s in this slow growth, by God’s grace, that your roots are strengthened and able to thrive no matter what may come your way.

So wait on the Lord. He is faithful and good. And in the waiting, he is changing you.

🌿Jeremiah 17:7-8
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.

✨Don't always be looking towards where you THINK you should be and learn to TRULY LIVE exactly where God has you. ✨

➡️ We can easily squander the life we've been given. Instead of trying to hurry into the next season, be rooted where you are and recognize all that God is doing. And as you walk in obedience to all that he has for you, you'll begin to discover that he provides JOY along the way.

➡️ So squash the notion that you can begin "living" once your circumstances change and trust that life begins TODAY - as you trust the one that saved you, is changing you, and is all you need and more.

🌿2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
