Advent Devotion with Chrismons:
The Crown reminds us that Christ is King. He is above all other kings and authorities and our first loyalty is to him. Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
Read John 19:1-25 — The drama of the last days and hours of Jesus’ earthly life unfolds quickly in John’s telling as Jesus appears before the rulers of this world before being handed over to be crucified, dead, and buried. Of today’s reading, Kevin Quast notes, “Those who assume power do not really have it; Jesus has control. He is crowned the King of the Jews. He is not simply lifted up on a cross; he is exalted before the world. His blood is shed as the new Passover Lamb. In the midst of threatening darkness, a glimmer of faith shines. That ember will glow until the resurrection fans it to flame.” As you read, consider what it means to proclaim that Christ is your King. How will you live your loyalty during this season as we anticipate his return in triumph?
Pray — Lord Jesus, help my life to reflect my loyalty to you as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Amen.
