When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you don't bring blood on your house, if any man fall from there (Deut. 22:8).

A parapet is a low wall at the edges of a flat roof. The purpose is to remind people to not step off the roof.

Remember that a roof is a covering. We often speak of covering people in prayer. The article I read speaks about keeping the soldier covered in prayer as they guard the country.

But even our covering of divine protection sometimes needs a reminder for the soldier of the LORD. He/she needs to remember there are boundaries to their duties. Stepping beyond those boundaries means DANGER. For instance, going into town late at night for party with the drunks. DANGER. For instance, collaborating with the enemy thru unofficial channels. DANGER. For instance, accepting a bribe to look the other way. DANGER.

In today's reading Deuteronomy 24 speaks of remarriage. If a man finds some indecency in his wife he can give her a certificate of divorce and send her away. The text goes on to stipulate if her second husband dies or also sends her away she cannot become remarried to the first husband, for that is an abomination because she has been defiled.

I would like to first point out this is unlike our culture. I believe in this context the wife of the first husband was a virgin when she was married. The defilement does not arise because she gets divorced and remarried (for the first husband sent her away). The deflilement comes about when she is made available a second time and the first husband tries to remarry her.

We are not told if the 2nd husband also found an indecency but only that he hates her. Did he hate her because she was already married or has children or lost her beauty? All we know here is the first husband for whatever reason wants his wife back. That action creates the defilement.

Yeshua when questioned by the Pharisees about marriage and divorce. said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery" (Matt. 19:8-9).

So whatever indecency she may have committed Yeshua refines that even more by saying the indecency has to be related to sexual immorality like adultery or a sexual act not permitted. So this is a case where Yeshua is even more stern than the law of Moses!

I am reminded in Deuteronomy of something called wife swapping. Women are not play toys to be handed back and forth as trophies. Men have to control their sexual urges and realize that a covenant is a covenant, epecially in marriage. For it is bcause of the hardness of hearts Moses permitted divorcing one's wife. (In today's culture divorce can be initiated by either party so women can get hard hearts also)

The covenent meaning of marriage is that the two become one flesh. This is a divine mystery not to be taken lightly. God instituted this covenant. It is for the good of people and for society. It is for stability of the young ones.

Shavuot (Pentecost)

Redeemed from Curses

Statue of Gold

Certain people have rececently commented that having a golden statue of President Trump is related to the hebrews making a golden calf at Sinai. I strongly disagree with this analogy. There is another more potent analogy available. The statue of Trump was dedicated June 6th at the National Doral Golf Club in Miami but calves and people are different. The golden calf represented the gods of Egypt or Canaan: Apis the bull-god or El the god of strength for the canaanites or even Ba'al, the Canaanite and Phoenician god of fertility, storms, rain, and agriculture....

In part 1 I went over the significance of Bethlehem, Psalm 2 (A Son to Please and Rule), Psalm 22 (The Forsaken Servant) and Jeremiah 31 (The New Covenant). This week I want to continue talking about Yeshua from the old testament (aka Tenakh) covering the words of Prophet Isaiah and what he said in several chapters. Monday night I was in my study praying before going to sleep. I felt an ungency to pray for my new Jewish friends. For the Jews have many reasons for rejecting 'Jesus' as their Messiah to include: 1) lack of freeing Israel from Rome (political messiah), 2) alternate interpretations of the gospel (salvation thru prayer and study of Torah), 3) lack of adherence to Torah teachings (church divorced from Judiasm), and 4) pogroms which Christians have carried out most effectively for 2000 years....
