In moments of conflict, the question is not only what will happen to our people or our nation. It is who we will become.

The Torah reminds us that even in the midst of war, disagreement, suffering, and uncertainty, we are responsible for the people we choose to be.

We may fight for what we believe is right. We may defend what matters most to us. But we are called to do so without losing our humanity.

Because ultimately, the struggle is not only about determining what happens around us. It is about determining what happens within us—and who we become.

At Stephen Wise Temple, Jewish learning is sacred work—helping young people discover how Jewish wisdom can bring meaning, purpose, and responsibility to their lives. Students are invited not only to inherit tradition, but to question it, engage with it deeply, and make it their own.

At the Center for Youth Engagement (CYE), we recognize that every family’s Jewish journey is unique. Through Camp Wise Sundays, Religious School partnerships, t’filah classes, Hebrew learning, and more, we meet students where they are and help them grow toward deeper connection and commitment.

CYE fosters curiosity and ethical responsibility, encouraging students to think critically, engage thoughtfully with Jewish tradition, and ground themselves in community, compassion, and action.

Wise is more than a Temple or a school—it is a true community. One that nurtures connection, deepens over time, and becomes family.

L’dor v’dor—generation to generation—these friendships are rooted in shared values, shared traditions, and shared life. From rotating Shabbat dinners and Passover seders to temple challah bakes and standing side by side during the High Holy Days, these are the moments that shape a lasting bond.

What makes it special is not just the time spent together, but the way those experiences are grounded in meaning, care, and continuity. A place where children grow—and so do the friendships formed around them.

As we prepare to welcome the month of Elul, I keep thinking about words written by Aner Shapira, who was killed on October 7 after saving the lives of so many others in a bomb shelter:
“We haven’t reached the point of no return. It’s up to us to make the vision come true.”

Those words feel especially powerful in Elul, a month that reminds us that change is always possible.

Our tradition teaches that God is patient with us. Then comes the shofar with a different message: Wake up. Change now. Don’t wait.

Aner believed that movement was possible, even when progress felt slow. And when the moment came, he acted.
Perhaps that is Elul’s invitation: believe change is possible, and begin.

Repairing the world begins with a single act of kindness.

At Stephen Wise Temple, Tikkun Olam is more than a value—it is a way of life. Inspired by the timeless words of Isaiah, our community answers the call to feed the hungry, care for those in need, pursue justice, and bring healing to a broken world.

Whether volunteering on Mitzvah Day, advocating in Sacramento, supporting neighbors in times of crisis, or empowering the next generation to lead with compassion, every act of service reflects our shared commitment to making a difference.

Together, we discover that when we help bring light to others, our own lives are filled with greater purpose, hope, and connection.

Wise. Where Tikkun Olam thrives.

What we notice in others can sometimes be a mirror of what we carry within ourselves.

In this week’s teaching, we’re reminded that no one’s mistakes or flaws are all that they are—including our own.

When we find ourselves focused on what’s wrong with someone else, perhaps we can pause and become curious: What is this revealing about me?
