The Torah reminds us that even in the midst of war, disagreement, suffering, and uncertainty, we are responsible for the people we choose to be.

We may fight for what we believe is right. We may defend what matters most to us. But we are called to do so without losing our humanity.

Because ultimately, the struggle is not only about determining what happens around us. It is about determining what happens within us—and who we become.

As we prepare to welcome the month of Elul, I keep thinking about words written by Aner Shapira, who was killed on October 7 after saving the lives of so many others in a bomb shelter:
“We haven’t reached the point of no return. It’s up to us to make the vision come true.”

Those words feel especially powerful in Elul, a month that reminds us that change is always possible.

Our tradition teaches that God is patient with us. Then comes the shofar with a different message: Wake up. Change now. Don’t wait.

Aner believed that movement was possible, even when progress felt slow. And when the moment came, he acted.
Perhaps that is Elul’s invitation: believe change is possible, and begin.

In this week’s teaching, we’re reminded that no one’s mistakes or flaws are all that they are—including our own.

When we find ourselves focused on what’s wrong with someone else, perhaps we can pause and become curious: What is this revealing about me?
