As we mark Juneteenth and look ahead to our nation’s 250th anniversary, we hold pride and humility in the same breath. We give thanks for the blessings of freedom, honor those who fought for it, and recognize that the work of building a more just society remains unfinished. May we be inspired by Juneteenth’s spirit of liberation and strive to build a world where every person is treated with dignity and respect. Amen.

The chapter we choose to begin with becomes the lens through which we interpret everything that follows.

The Israelites remembered the fish of Egypt. But when the story begins with fish, the wilderness feels like deprivation. When the story begins with slavery, the wilderness becomes freedom.

Nothing has changed except the beginning of the story.
