Today, we honor the humanitarian workers who enter places of crisis carrying food, medicine, comfort, and hope.

They serve people confronting war, displacement, hunger, natural disasters, and unimaginable loss—often at great risk to their own lives. Their work reminds us that compassion is more than a feeling. It is the courageous decision to show up for another human being.

On World Humanitarian Day, we remember those who have lost their lives in service and offer our gratitude to all who continue this essential work around the world.

Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, while Eastern Orthodox Christians observe the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Though expressed through distinct traditions, both feasts honor Mary’s extraordinary faith, devotion, and place in Christian life.

May her example inspire humility, courage, and loving service.

Today, we honor the world’s Indigenous peoples—their cultures, spiritual traditions, languages, wisdom, and enduring relationships with the earth.

We also recognize the courage of Indigenous communities who continue to protect their identities, defend their rights, and preserve sacred knowledge for generations to come.

May we do more than celebrate Indigenous cultures. May we listen to Indigenous voices, learn from their wisdom, and stand beside them in the work for dignity, justice, and self-determination.
