"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9

If there is one article that stands at the center of the Augsburg Confession, it is Article IV. In fact, many Lutherans have called it the article on which the Church stands or falls. Why? Because it answers the most important question a sinner can ever ask: “How am I made right with God?”

Nearly every religion in the world answers that question the same way: do more. Be better. Work harder. Become more spiritual. Prove yourself worthy. The Augsburg Confession gives a completely different answer. It says that we are justified before God by grace, through faith, for Christ’s sake. Not because of our own merits, works, or worthiness. This single truth changes everything. Justification means that God declares sinners righteous, not because we have become righteous by our own efforts, but because Christ’s perfect righteousness is credited to us through faith. Jesus fulfilled the Law we could not keep. He bore the judgment our sins deserved. His obedience becomes our righteousness, and His victory becomes our own. This is why faith is so important. Faith is not another good work we perform to earn salvation. It is simply the empty hand that receives the gift God freely gives.

This is also why Lutherans are so careful to distinguish between faith and works. Good works absolutely matter. Christians are called to love their neighbors, serve their families, and live holy lives. But those works are the fruit of salvation, never its cause. A healthy tree bears good fruit, but the fruit does not make the tree alive.

The comfort of Article IV is that your standing before God does not rise and fall with your performance. On your best day, you are not accepted because you have earned it. On your worst day, you are not rejected because Christ has failed you. Your hope rests entirely on Him.

That is the beating heart of the Augsburg Confession. Not that sinners can climb their way to God, but that God, in His mercy, has come to sinners through Jesus Christ, and freely declares them righteous for His sake.

That is the Gospel.

Our students memorized a large portion of the Declaration of Independence this year to honor our 250th anniversary. I encourage you to read it aloud this 4th of July. May God bless America!

We had such a great time enjoying the beautiful day at the Lutheran schools' field day in West Seneca yesterday!
