COLUMBIA, TN — St Anna Orthodox Christian Church is seeking support for what parish leaders describe as a transformative opportunity to secure a permanent home capable of supporting the congregation’s rapid growth and long-term future.

The Antiochian parish announced plans to pursue the purchase of a 52-acre property in nearby Lewisburg, Tennessee, listed at $2.45 million. Church leaders say the property at 1190 West Ellington Parkway includes an 8,900-square-foot event center that could be adapted into a church with relatively limited renovations, along with two homes, a large unfinished barn, and parking for approximately 150 vehicles.

I almost never comment here on social/political issues, but some of the things I have seen relating to the Supreme Court abortion news have made feel compelled to say something.

The boldness which is shown in people’s support of abortion is quite saddening, especially seeing so many people get caught up in our culture’s raging current of delusion. Of course, the decision by the Supreme Court and legislation on the matter means nothing if the heart’s of people remain hardened on abortion, but the fact that people so openly support this evil is lamentable.

What is most disappointing is to see Christians supporting these lies. The Church has always seen abortion as murder, and there is no other way to look at it. A person is human at the time of conception, because they possess a human soul and a material body. The notion that a baby must reach a certain degree of bodily development to suddenly be considered human is incredibly subjective, and based in constructed medical definitions. A person’s humanity is not dependent on a certain degree of cognitive function or bodily wholeness. A baby in the womb has been given life, and is therefore fully human and deserving to live just like anyone else.

Throughout history, powerful people have justified murder by claiming that the one they kill is in some way not human. In these cases they have always had their own “proof” to back up these claims, but these have of course been fabricated to fit their own ideology. Genocidal murder of people throughout history has been carried out based upon the belief that those killed are less than human. The same is true of abortion today. People openly cheer in support of murder while proclaiming it as their right. People kill those who are inconvenient so they can glorify themselves.

The notion of abortion being about a woman’s right to choose is entirely illogical. The extension of person’s right for choice and personal autonomy ends when it means taking the life of another human being. We rightfully consider the murder of innocent people outside the womb to be evil, so why is it considered a human right to murder those in the womb who are unwanted.

People often make the claim that abortion is a personal choice and does not impact others. This could not be further from the truth. When innocent people are killed in an evil act of violence, we rightfully condemn it and mourn the loss of those lives that were taken. Christians must stand firm against blatant evil, proclaiming the truth of Christ’s love. Legislation or Supreme Court rulings will not change anything, if people remain blinded by the lies which are culture forces upon us. The only way that real change will happen is through the individual transformation of people’s hearts through the revelation of Christ’s love. It only when people realize that the “truths” of the world are actually lies that people’s convictions will be changed. The world tells us to live only for ourselves, by Christ tells us to take up our Cross and follow Him. This life is not about serving ourselves, but it’s about showing unconditional, self-emptying love to all people. We are called to put are selfish desires to death, cutting off our pride and egoism, so that we can truly love others without any motives or expectations. We do good to others not to gain anything by it, but simply because we love them.

Authentic truth and love can only be found in Jesus Christ, not in any of the opinions and ideologies of the world. Jesus Christ loves and values the humanity of all people, including the most vulnerable and the voiceless, of which the unborn are the most vivid example.

No person has the right to harm or take the life of another. Abortion is not healthcare, it is clinical murder. Babies in the womb are living human beings, and medical professionals do not have the right to decide whether or not they are human. Each child is created by God in His image, and no person has the right to kill their fellow man because it meets their individualist needs.

Lord have mercy!

The Opening of the Doors at the Paschal Vigil, from St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA (2008)

-During Paschal procession at the beginning of the Orthros of Pascha, the priest knocks on the doors of church with the Cross, while reading verses from Psalm 23 (24). This symbolizes Christ leading us from Hades (represented by the darkness outside) in the Kingdom of Heaven (the Church). Through His resurrection, Christ has broken open the gates that once prevented mankind from entering into eternal life, pulling us up with Him out of death and into life. Once the doors are opened the proclamation that "Christ is Risen!" is made, and the faithful enter into the Church chanting hymns of the resurrection.

The Hymn of Kassiani
-This penitential hymn recounts the story of the sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus (Luke 7:36-39, Matthew 26:6-16). It is sung at the Bridegroom Orthros of Holy Wednesday. The hymn was composed by Kassiani the Nun in the 9th century.

O Lord God, the woman who had fallen into many sins, having perceived Thy divinity, received the rank of ointment-bearer, offering Thee spices before Thy burial. Wailing and crying, Woe is me, for the love of adultery and sin hath given me a dark and lightless night. Accept the fountains of my tears, O Thou who drawest the waters of the sea by the clouds. Incline, O incline Thou to the sigh of my heart, O Thou who didst bend the heavens by Thine inapprehensible condescension. I will kiss Thy pure feet and I will wipe them with my tresses. I will kiss Thy feet whose tread, when it fell on the ears of Eve in Paradise, dismayed her so that she did hide herself because of fear. Who then shall examine the multitude of my sins, and the depth of Thy judgments? Wherefore, O my Savior and the deliverer of my soul, turn not away from Thy handmaiden, O Thou of countless mercies.
