When you can’t visit a family grave, you still want to know it’s being cared for.

Heritage Monument Care helps families arrange grave marker care in Georgia and Alabama, whether they live nearby or hundreds of miles away.

We assess each stone before cleaning, use methods suited to its material and condition, and provide before-and-after photographs so you can see the work. Every cleaning includes two visits, with a follow-up assessment and additional treatment when needed.

If there’s a family marker you’d like help caring for, message us the cemetery’s name and location. Include a photo if you have one. We’ll talk through how we can help.

Time may darken a monument, but it should not be allowed to obscure the life recorded there.

Heritage Monument Care is now scheduling professional monument cleaning and care in DeKalb County, Alabama, and surrounding communities.

Our conservation-minded process is never “one and done.” Every cleaning includes two visits, careful photographic documentation and the patient use of stone-safe methods—never pressure washing, bleach or harsh chemicals. When needed, we also provide GPS mapping, family-history research and Find a Grave updates.

A careful cleaning does more than improve a marker’s appearance. It helps keep the names, dates and details of a family’s history visible for generations to come.

Our work doesn’t end when we pack up the brushes.

Every Heritage Monument Care cleaning includes two visits, with research and documentation continuing in between.

The first visit begins with an assessment and photographs of the marker, along with any needed GPS mapping. We carefully trim back vegetation, gently brush the stone and apply a stone-safe biological cleaner.

Between visits, our attention turns to the history, with any needed research and updates to Find a Grave memorials.

Then we return. We assess how the stone has responded and, if needed, repeat the biological treatment and gentle brushing.

Whether you live nearby or care for a family grave from a distance, that follow-through is included in every cleaning.

Cleaning a grave marker is only part of preserving it.

Every marker we care for at Heritage Monument Care is also documented with before-and-after photographs and its GPS location, helping create a record of both its condition and exactly where it can be found.

We also document the memorial online when appropriate—creating or updating cemetery memorial information so that names, dates, inscriptions and photographs have another place to endure.

Why does that matter? Because stone is remarkably durable, but the information carved into it isn’t permanent. Weathering, time and changing cemetery landscapes can gradually make inscriptions harder to read and graves more difficult for future generations to locate.

A cleaner marker is important. A preserved record of it may be just as valuable.

A name. Two dates. And sometimes, just a few words that tell you everything.

“OUR BELOVED SON” is only three words, but they remind us that a grave marker is more than stone waiting to be cleaned. It is a record of a life—and often one of the last tangible connections a family has to someone who came before.

That is why proper monument care begins with observation. What kind of stone is it? How has it weathered? Is the surface sound? Are there cracks, previous repairs or other vulnerabilities? What can the inscription itself tell us?

Only then should the cleaning begin.

At Heritage Monument Care, preservation and remembrance belong together. The goal isn’t simply to leave a marker cleaner than we found it. It is to care for what remains so that the name—and the story attached to it—can endure.

Some damage begins with the best of intentions.

A family member sees an old marker darkened by years of weather and biological growth, finds a product online advertised specifically for cleaning headstones, and assumes it must be safe.

Unfortunately, the words on the front of the bottle don’t always tell the whole story.

Some cleaners contain bleach or other oxidizing compounds, strong acids or alkaline ingredients that can be inappropriate for historic stone. And the most troubling effects aren’t necessarily the ones you see while you’re cleaning. Certain products can leave soluble salts behind in porous stone, where damage may develop long after the marker first appears beautifully clean.

That’s why good monument care begins before the first drop of cleaner ever touches the stone: identifying the material, assessing its condition, understanding what’s in the product, and choosing the gentlest appropriate treatment.

These markers have already survived generations. Caring for them should always begin with the next generation in mind.

A good cleaning shouldn’t erase the years.

An old grave marker doesn’t need to look new to be well cared for. The goal is to gently address biological growth and accumulated soiling while respecting the stone’s age, character and original surface.

That distinction matters. Every marker is different—and knowing what not to remove can be just as important as knowing what to clean.

Preserve the stone. Preserve the story.
