The Siren Song of Sensual Service (Part 2) 2 Peter 2:2 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 6/14/26)
While “The obedient Son was treated as guilty” is an accurate statement, the rest of the sentence, “so that guilty sinners could be clothed in His righteousness”, is completely false. It is a made-up doctrine concocted to hide the despicable lie behind the twin false doctrines of Faith Only and Once Saved Always Saved – Total Depravity. Total depravity teaches that we are born eternally guilty of Adam’s sin so the forgiveness promised by God (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 13:38; Romans 4:6-8) isn’t actually possible. Then they completely change Genesis 15:6 from our faith being credited to us for justification, which is what the Bible teaches (Romans 4:22-25), to Christ’s life covering us to hide our endless sinfulness from God’s eyes, which is what the quoted author claims. Oh, what foolishness men make up to protect their heresies. And how many foolish people are led to their spiritual death by the Siren Song of Sensual Service (2 Peter 2:2, 18-22).

Teach These Things 1 Timothy 6:2-5 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 6/21/26)
Watching a kid run to third base after hitting the ball in T-Ball is a common occurrence. They’re just starting to learn the rules and don’t know the difference between first and third bases. So, they hear “run” and they run. Spiritually speaking we learn the rules by hearing “sound” doctrine and putting it into practice. It takes a while to learn all the words of Christ conforming to godliness and 1 Timothy is a great source of “these things” brethren need to learn. Sadly, Paul began and ended the book by urging Timothy to teach brethren not to teach a “different doctrine (1 Tim 1:3; 6:3). Will we hold to “sound” words, or surrender to a “different” doctrine?

The Siren Song of Sensual Service 2 Peter 2:2 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 6/14/26)
The Sirens of The Odyssey were a mythical tale used to teach men the powerful danger of temptation through women, words and song. They also serve as a warning for Christians of the dangerous Siren Song of Sensual Service that tempts us to turn worship into a “sensual worship service”. Through music and the “direct indwelling of the Holy Spirit” our emotions and feelings are twisted into proof that we are saved, and an aid in maintaining salvation, rather than a great response to the objective word of God changing our mind and will. Using subtle words false teachers manipulate us with a sense-oriented message that bypasses the mind and goes straight for the emotions. We must tie ourselves to the unbreakable mast of God’s word to avoid being led astray by the Siren Song of Sensual Service.

What Would You Do For the Name of God? 1 Timothy 6:1-2 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 6/14/26)
“Whatever He requires” may be our snap answer to the question, “What would you do for the name of God?” But unless we’re willing to submit to Him fully and completely then we don’t actually mean it. Which means we likely would not submit to slavery for the Name of the Lord, as Paul commands (1 Timothy 6:1-2). Our unwillingness to submit leads to a far worse slavery, a submission to Satan and sin. Will you do whatever He requires for the Name of God?

The Tyndale Bible Luke 4:14-21 (Dennis Tucker Lilac Road church of Christ 6/7/26)
The Bible’s path from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek to English was long and winding. Along the way there was a tremendous cost in blood, sweat and tears. For centuries the Catholic church controlled access to God by holding His word in their iron fist. Then, 500 years ago, William Tyndale, a relentless and bold scholar, translated the Bible into English. Ten years later in October 1536 he was executed for the crime of heresy against the Catholic Church. Less than 100 years later in 1611 the King James Bible, mostly a copy of the Tyndale Bible, was openly published and soon swept the world. Do we show appreciation for his sacrifice by constant study of God’s word?

40 Days and 40 Nights Genesis 7:4-6, 11-12 (Dennis Tucker Lilac Road church of Christ 6/7/26)
Among the numbers threaded through the Bible is the Forty Days and Forty Nights of The Flood (Genesis 7), twice with Moses on Mount Sinai receiving the law (Exodus 24:16-18; 34:27-28); the spies in Cannan (Numbers 13:17-20, 25), and Jesus for the wilderness temptation (Matthew 4:1-2).

Pseudo Servants 2 Peter 2:1 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 5/31/26)
Pseudo Servants are fake, phony, liars who sneak into the church with false doctrine designed to deceive. Rather than boldly declaring what they believe and being open to correction like Apollos (Acts 18:24-28) they secretly introduce their preferred ideas. Some think they have the truth, and claim a desire to teach only the truth, don’t when faced with correction fight back deceitfully with dishonest and harsh criticism of their critics. They’re in the Lord’s church now so listen carefully with discernment to every sermon you hear, whether in person or online – even this one!

Straight Talk About Alcohol 1 Timothy 5:21-25 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 5/31/26)
Anyone claiming 1 Timothy 5:23 authorizes “social drinking” has an eisegesis problem – they’re reading into the text what they want to be there (they may have drinking problem too). However, proper exegesis reveals this about Timothy taking his medicine despite his desire not to be associated with drinking alcoholic beverages. Ask three questions before engaging in “social drinking”. Why would a child of God want to engage in the recreational use of drugs of any sort? Is this intended to please God or the flesh? Will it glorify God or give in to the world?

An Unreliable Revelation 2 Peter 2 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 5/24/26)
While we should avoid unreliable vehicles such as the GMC Acadia which scored a terrible 14 out of 100 on Consumer Reports rating, it’s not the end of the world if you bought one. Especially in comparison to the results of buying into an Unreliable Revelation as described in 2 Peter 2. Because there are four certainties in the text. It is certain that there are false teachers in the church (v1). It is certain that God will judge them and rescue His faithful believers (vv1, 3). It is certain they are knowable by their sensuality and senseless teaching and conduct (vv2, 10-14). It is certain their greed only brings slavery (vv15-22). Whatever you do, don’t buy into their destructive ways.
