What Would You Do For the Name of God? 1 Timothy 6:1-2 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 6/14/26)
“Whatever He requires” may be our snap answer to the question, “What would you do for the name of God?” But unless we’re willing to submit to Him fully and completely then we don’t actually mean it. Which means we likely would not submit to slavery for the Name of the Lord, as Paul commands (1 Timothy 6:1-2). Our unwillingness to submit leads to a far worse slavery, a submission to Satan and sin. Will you do whatever He requires for the Name of God?

The Tyndale Bible Luke 4:14-21 (Dennis Tucker Lilac Road church of Christ 6/7/26)
The Bible’s path from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek to English was long and winding. Along the way there was a tremendous cost in blood, sweat and tears. For centuries the Catholic church controlled access to God by holding His word in their iron fist. Then, 500 years ago, William Tyndale, a relentless and bold scholar, translated the Bible into English. Ten years later in October 1536 he was executed for the crime of heresy against the Catholic Church. Less than 100 years later in 1611 the King James Bible, mostly a copy of the Tyndale Bible, was openly published and soon swept the world. Do we show appreciation for his sacrifice by constant study of God’s word?

40 Days and 40 Nights Genesis 7:4-6, 11-12 (Dennis Tucker Lilac Road church of Christ 6/7/26)
Among the numbers threaded through the Bible is the Forty Days and Forty Nights of The Flood (Genesis 7), twice with Moses on Mount Sinai receiving the law (Exodus 24:16-18; 34:27-28); the spies in Cannan (Numbers 13:17-20, 25), and Jesus for the wilderness temptation (Matthew 4:1-2).

Pseudo Servants 2 Peter 2:1 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 5/31/26)
Pseudo Servants are fake, phony, liars who sneak into the church with false doctrine designed to deceive. Rather than boldly declaring what they believe and being open to correction like Apollos (Acts 18:24-28) they secretly introduce their preferred ideas. Some think they have the truth, and claim a desire to teach only the truth, don’t when faced with correction fight back deceitfully with dishonest and harsh criticism of their critics. They’re in the Lord’s church now so listen carefully with discernment to every sermon you hear, whether in person or online – even this one!

Straight Talk About Alcohol 1 Timothy 5:21-25 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 5/31/26)
Anyone claiming 1 Timothy 5:23 authorizes “social drinking” has an eisegesis problem – they’re reading into the text what they want to be there (they may have drinking problem too). However, proper exegesis reveals this about Timothy taking his medicine despite his desire not to be associated with drinking alcoholic beverages. Ask three questions before engaging in “social drinking”. Why would a child of God want to engage in the recreational use of drugs of any sort? Is this intended to please God or the flesh? Will it glorify God or give in to the world?

An Unreliable Revelation 2 Peter 2 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 5/24/26)
While we should avoid unreliable vehicles such as the GMC Acadia which scored a terrible 14 out of 100 on Consumer Reports rating, it’s not the end of the world if you bought one. Especially in comparison to the results of buying into an Unreliable Revelation as described in 2 Peter 2. Because there are four certainties in the text. It is certain that there are false teachers in the church (v1). It is certain that God will judge them and rescue His faithful believers (vv1, 3). It is certain they are knowable by their sensuality and senseless teaching and conduct (vv2, 10-14). It is certain their greed only brings slavery (vv15-22). Whatever you do, don’t buy into their destructive ways.

Respect The Elders 1 Timothy 5:17-22 (James McClenny Lilac Road church of Christ 5/24/26)
Among the few things my dad and I disagreed about was whether or not a preacher should also serve as an elder in the church. He didn’t say it was unscriptural, just unwise. I disagreed that it was unwise since Paul’s admonition to Respect The Elders 1 Timothy 5:17-22 explicitly said elders could be paid by the church, “especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.” “Double honor” refers to treating with dignity and providing support for elders – specifically those who preach. That settles the question for me about biblical authority and wisdom. However there are some limitations in the text implied by “lead effectively” and “work hard” (v17) as well as the process for correcting elders who sin and the prohibition of playing favorites (vv19-22). We must love God and respect the elders too much to let them sin with impunity.

Winds of Doctrine Acts 27 (Dennis Tucker Lilac Road church of Christ 5/17/26)
Paul’s journey to Rome was hindered by winds that drove them off course until the ship wrecked on the rocks of a foreign shore (Acts 27). In a similar way our journey to eternity is hindered by winds of doctrine presented by false apostles who seek to wreck our ship of faith (2 Corinthians 11:12-14). Doctrines like annihilationism which denies our future resurrection. Or the doctrine of purgatory which claims sinners can go through a punitive cleansing period between death and their final acceptance into heaven. Or universalism that says everyone will be saved no matter how they live on earth. Don’t let these winds of false doctrines crash your ship of faith.

Avoiding the Pitfalls of Aging Ecclesiates 12:1-8 (Dennis Tucker Lilac Road church of Christ 5/17/26)
Along with a lengthy series of birthdays comes old age that includes certain changes and challenges (Ecc 12:1-8). As believers we can be fruitful and productive well into our not-so golden years (Psalm 92:13-14) by eliminating the habits of Constant Complaining, Rejecting Anything New, Failing to Really Listen, being Quick to Give Advice (opinions) and Repeating the Same Old Stories. In case we live long enough to reach old age remember God while we’re young.
