Have a snack and a nap.
After the great victory on Mount Carmel, the prophet Elijah was worn out and afraid (1 Kgs 19). Fleeing from threats, he ran into the wilderness and sat under a juniper (broom) tree. He told God he had “had enough,” even praying for death. Instead of rebuke, God sent an angel who gently touched Elijah: “Arise, eat”. On the coals was a simple meal, a loaf of bread and water. Elijah ate, slept, and was cared for. The angel returned a second time to feed him again, saying “The journey is too great for you”. In that way God provided for Elijah’s physical exhaustion and emotional despair.
It’s no accident Elijah rested under a broom tree. The juniper tree was known for its shade and fragrance, a tree of rest, renewal and hope. Even great men of God become discouraged and tired and depressed. Yet God’s response was tender care, not shame, but rest and nourishment for his journey.
God sees our exhaustion. Like Elijah, you may be running on empty, juggling responsibilities, worries, and fatigue. In those moments, God does not scold you. He sends food for the journey. Just as Elijah was given bread and water to eat and sleep, God often encourages us to pause and rest. As a counselor notes, burnout comes when we say “I don’t need rest,” but Elijah’s story shows us we all need to recharge.
God invites you to rest in Him. Jesus echoed this need for rest: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matt. 11:28). God cares about your weariness. He knows your journey is hard. Even when we feel isolated or overwhelmed, God speaks to us, often in a “gentle whisper”. He may tell you quietly, “Rest now; I am with you.”
We’re never alone. Elijah felt utterly alone, but God reminded him there were “7000 in Israel who have not bowed to Baal". Likewise, remember you are cared for by a God who sees even the sparrow fall (Matt. 10:29) and holds you in His hand. You have sisters in faith around you and a God who provides strength for the journey.
Spiritual renewal heals physical weariness. As Elijah received a “second touch from heaven”, God may send His Word, prayer, or loving friends to nourish your soul. Let His Spirit refresh you. The God who gave Elijah rest is the same God who will renew you when you’re spent.
Lord Jesus, I’m weary and feel worn out. Just as You cared for Elijah, care for me now. Give me rest and renewal, a bit of peace under Your juniper tree. Feed my soul with Your presence and strengthen me for the road ahead. I come to You as You promised: “all who labor and are heavy laden… and You will give rest”. Thank You for Your tender care. Amen.
