Last Sunday Lauren shared with us:

"Early on in mine & David’s marriage we had a common argument.

And I’m sure we’re not the only ones who have had this discussion in their home! It would go something like this:

Lauren: talking about her day or something that needs to be done

David: scrolling through his phone or working on the computer

Lauren: gets mad at David for not paying attention to her.

David: then proceeds to tell Lauren everything that she just said.

Lauren: then gets madder & tells him that maybe he was hearing what she was saying, but he wasn’t actually listening to her.

And so, the argument continues & vice versa when I wasn’t listening.

How often do we do this when the Lord is trying to speak to us.

Are we hearing his voice?

Are we listening to his voice?

Are we following through with what he says?

Hearing is defined by the ability to perceive a sound.

We all have the ability to hear the voice of the Lord, but that’s easier said than done right?

In my example of mine & David’s argument he could have just put down his phone & given me his full attention. Simple enough solution. But it takes an extra amount of effort & awareness to do so, and to take a break from what we are doing.

That’s the same with hearing the spirit. We can’t just coast through life assuming that if God wants to talk to us then he will make it obvious. We have to be aware & conscious to make sure we are available to hear what he has to say. He won’t’ demand our attention, we have to desire & seek it.

We have innumerable things in this world that are trying to distract us & fight for our attention. Social media, news, movies & tv, podcasts, music, youtube, you name it.

According to a 2022 review, 80% of people check their phones within the first 10 minutes of the day. And with everything that’s going on in the world it can become easy to be weighed down, overwhelmed, & caught up in all the turmoil.

So how do we hear the voice of the still small spirit in a world that is so demanding for our attention & loud?

One thing that I’ve found helpful is to step away from the noise & let there be quiet in my life. I have to take breaks from social media, news or other distractions.

The world is loud & the spirit speaks quietly. We won’t be able to hear him if we don’t silence our lives just a little. And if we fill our lives with entertainment of the world & not enough hearing the voice of the Lord then it will become increasingly difficult to not get caught up in the turmoil of the world.

So the definition of hearing is the ability to perceive a sound. But the definition of listening is giving one’s attention to a sound.
Once we are able to silence the turmoil of the world so we can hear his voice, we can put our attention into listening & understanding what the lord is saying to us.

As we listen to the voice of the Lord we won’t always know or understand what he is trying to tell us immediately. It takes time & practice. Just like trying to understand our little toddler. As we know God & practice listening, we will get better at it.

Even though my form of worship has significantly changed over the years we can always find God in our day-to-day life no matter how busy we are. He will always be there willing to speak to us if we are willing to take a moment to listen & focus our attention on him.

There are many ways the Spirit speaks to us, but none is more powerful than the Spirit speaking peace to your mind. This peace is something we can all seek and obtain even in this crazy noisy world we live in.

Following the promptings is the action & shows God our willingness to obey his will and trust him.

I think that following the promptings of the spirit can be two different parts:
Acting on the prompting and Following through on the prompting to it’s conclusion.

A couple weeks ago our family was hit with a really nasty sickness that I thought would never end. We kept missing church & one Sunday when I was feeling better, I felt like I should go and at least teach my primary class. I didn’t get to prepare much & I think in the class we ended up talking about bees for a good 10 minutes for some unknown reason. We then ended the class coloring & I felt pretty defeated & wanted to go home.

Out of the blue as we were coloring one of the primary kids told me “You know, sometimes I don’t know if God is even listening to me when I pray.”

I was very surprised, and I had a great opportunity to share my testimony about how God is always listening & how much he loves us. That ended up being one of my most spiritual experiences teaching in primary & it happened within the last 5 minutes of our class.

Even though I felt like I should have stayed home that week I was grateful that I followed through on that prompting even though I had no idea why until those last 5 minutes of the class. And maybe it wasn’t a big deal for that primary kid, but it was a testimony builder for me of the sweet spirit of children & how much God loves each and every one of us.

I am grateful for the still small voice of the Lord in this earth. I grateful he gives us opportunities to hear him & listen. For me personally I feel like things are becoming louder & more distracting in the world. There’s never been a time that I need the still small guidance of the Lord in my life to help me understand and follow his path. And I know that if we set apart time for him we will hear him speaking to us & our lives will be forever blessed."

Thanks so much, Lauren, for your example and testimony of how the Lord does and can speak to us!

We invite you to learn how the Lord speaks to you. Are you listening to his voice, or hearing him? What changes can you make to hear the Lord more throughout your life?

We also extend the invitation to join us for church tomorrow at 10am:)

On June 9th, several of our sweet Relief Society sisters and children helped with concessions and made cookies for La Porte's Arts in the Parks at the Fox Park Amphitheater. A total of 30 service hours was completed, getting us even closer to our goal of 2,022 hours by the end of the year! Great job to everyone!

Our very own Emily Palmer has been a missionary for over 6 weeks now! She is currently serving in the Knoxville,Tennessee mission and will be serving until November 2023.

Here are a few things she has said about serving a full-time mission:

"I have been going back and forth about serving a mission since I was 14 and I’m so glad that I have made the decision to serve, I know the Lord is happy with my decision!!!! I know that there are people in Tennessee that are waiting to become apart of the gospel of Jesus Christ and that they are waiting for me to bring it to them. I am so grateful for this amazing opportunity and I am so excited to teach the gospel to the people of Tennessee!!"

She later said,

"I'm finally a missionary! I know that if I rely on the Lord to help me through it that everything will be alright though. I'm super excited to change and develope into the person that Heavenly Father would have me become."

"Come unto Christ, and partake of the goodness of God, that they might enter into his rest" Jacob 1:7

"As I have put my life in Jesus Christs hands I have seen Him carry my burdens and my worries more than I ever have, and He wants to do the same for everyone that will let Him."

We are so proud of Emily and her decision to be a full-time missionary!

What is a missionary?

A missionary is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who shares the gospel of Jesus Christ. For those who choose to be a full time missionary, they serve for a period of 18-24 months.

For young women, they are able to serve for 18 months beginning at the age of 19, if they choose.

For young men, they are able to serve for 2 years beginning at the age of 18, if they choose.

Deciding to serve a mission whether it be a prosyliting or service mission, is a personal decision made between each person and the Lord.

Every member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a duty to share the gospel of Jesus Christ; however, it is always a choice for someone to serve a full-time mission or not. Young people are especially encouraged to serve missions because it is such a great opportunity for learning, serving, and growing. Older individuals and couples serve as well.

A huge congratulations to our Seminary Graduates, Heber and Carson! They completed 4 years of Seminary, way to go!

Another congratulations to those who completed seminary for the year working towards their 4 year completion: Allen, Marie, David, Keegan, (and not pictured) Addy and Amyr. We are all so proud of your hard work and dedication!

What is Seminary?

Seminary is a four-year program in which youth study the gospel of Jesus Christ as found in the scriptures and the teachings of latter-day prophets. Seminary students are generally 14–18 years old.

Each year they study a different book of scripture including The Old Testament, The New Testament, The Book of Mormon, and The Doctrine and Covenants.

Many of these youth have had early morning Seminary (meeting at the church at 6-6:30 a.m. before school), afternoon Seminary, and online/adaptable days and times due to the pandemic. Our youth are amazing and we are so proud of them!

Below in the comments is a short 40 second video by Carson and Heber about one of the many gospel principles that they studied during their time in Seminary.

Happy Sunday and Happy May!

Once a month, sacrament meeting is a fast and testimony meeting. Usually this is on the first Sunday of the month.

We Partake of the sacrament and strengthen one another by bearing testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel. Members are encouraged to come to the meeting fasting if they are able to.

In a fast and testimony meeting, there are no assigned speakers or special musical selections. Instead, the person conducting bears a brief testimony. He then invites members of the congregation to bear their testimonies. To bear testimony means to declare gospel truths as inspired by the Holy Ghost.

The Savior Jesus Christ taught that we should love our neighbors as ourselves. As we sacrifice and serve others as the Savior did, both the givers and receivers are blessed with compassion, empathy, and love that lead to exaltation and eternal life.

Bishop Dean M. Davies taught that “caring for the poor and needy is a fundamental gospel doctrine and an essential element in the eternal plan of salvation” (“The Law of the Fast: A Personal Responsibility to Care for the Poor and Needy,” Oct. 2014 general conference).

The scriptures are replete with this command to serve others.

“For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land” (Deuteronomy 15:11).

Fasting and fast offerings are one way to help care for the poor and the needy.

“The Lord has established the law of the fast and fast offerings to bless His people and to provide a way for them to serve those in need (see Isaiah 58:6–12; Malachi 3:8–12).

When members fast, they are asked to give to the Church a fast offering at least equal to the value of the food they would have eaten. If possible, they should be generous and give more. Blessings associated with the law of the fast include closeness to the Lord, increased spiritual strength, temporal well-being, greater compassion, and a stronger desire to serve."

What is fasting?

Fasting is a commandment from the Lord where we humble ourselves before Him by voluntarily refraining from eating and drinking (see Doctrine and Covenants 88:76).

In the Church today, one Sabbath day each month is set aside for the purpose of fasting. Members of the Church go without food and water for two consecutive meals in a 24-hour period and then contribute the money that would have been spent for that food to those in need (see Alma 34:28).

Fasting has been a practice of the prophets of God and members of His Church since ancient times. In Old Testament times, Moses and Elijah fasted (see Exodus 34:28; 1 Kings 19:8).

For the Israelites, fasting was often used for certain occasions or for divine assistance. In New Testament times, Jesus Christ fasted 40 days and 40 nights in preparation for His ministry (see Matthew 4:1–4).

He taught His disciples about the power and importance of fasting. This commandment to fast continues in our day.

We are so happy to help share our love and knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Reach out if.you have any questions!
