Today is the Feast of Saint Vincent de Paul, the 17th century French priest renowned for his generosity in serving the poorest in society. Happy feast day!⁣

The President of the Diocesan Council of Lansing of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, Joseph Tomczyk, explains a bit more about the history of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and it’s daily work of mercy carried out for the love of Christ across the 10-counties that make up the Diocese of Lansing. Joseph says:⁣

In 1833, after the French Revolution young Frédéric Ozanam and five other students at the Sorbonne were challenged by other students who believed the Church was unnecessary. The challengers believed that modern, scientific methods should address society’s problems. “What is the Church doing today?”⁣

In response Blessed Frédéric and his companions met and formed the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (originally the “Conference of Charity”). In Blessed Frédéric’s words: “We must do what is agreeable to God. Therefore, we must do what our Lord Jesus Christ did when preaching the gospel. Let us go to the poor!”⁣

Life can be tough; Vincentians offer help and hope to our struggling Neighbors. For some it is a one-time need. For others, the assistance is ongoing. We assist with housing, food, transportation, utilities, and medical expenses, along with other needs: “No work of charity is foreign to the Society” (Our Rule §1.3). ⁣

Today, the Society is in over 150 countries, with 800,000 Vincentians and 1,500,000 volunteers. Every day, it helps over 30 million people.⁣

Last year we in the Diocese touched the lives of over 50,000 Neighbors. In addition to providing material assistance, we are there to listen, to support, and to encourage.⁣

Here at the St. Therese of Lisieux Conference, we are blest with the Christ-like generosity of our Parishioners, the Greater Lansing Food Bank and Meijer's who enable us to provide food and personal items to 30 families (over 200 mouths) EACH WEEK!⁣

See the Face of Christ in those we serve; Be the Face of Christ to them. This is the goal of the Society’s Vincentians (members) as we engage in our ministry.⁣

Vincentians seek to grow in holiness through friendship and service. Heeding Christ’s admonishment, “…whatever you did for one of the least of those brethren of mine, you did unto me” (Matthew 25:40, New Catholic Bible, St. Joseph Edition,) ⁣

We are often blessed to see the Face of Christ.⁣

St. Vincent De Paul, apostle of charity, pray for us!⁣

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Mercy, happy feast day!⁣

Fr. Tim Nelson, pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea in Jackson, ministers to those in prison and reflects below on the power of participating in this corporal work of mercy:⁣

On the feast of the Assumption, 1975, the Vietnamese Archbishop of Saigon, Francis Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan, was arrested by the Communist authorities and imprisoned for thirteen years. In the midst of agonizing isolation and abandonment, he clung to hope. From his prison cell, he wrote this prayer:⁣

“Jesus, I will not wait; I will live the present moment and fill it with love… The road of hope is paved with little steps of hope. The life of hope is made of brief minutes of hope…”⁣

I have celebrated many Masses for those incarcerated. I have been amazed at the transforming power of Sacramental Confession and Holy Communion to give prisoners a tangible experience of God’s mercy – and that gives them hope. Thanks be to God.⁣

Our Lady of Mercy, pray for us!

Everlasting God, we pray for a legacy of lifelong learning to be established within the hearts of students.⁣

Just as Paul continued to grow and learn throughout his ministry, we ask for minds that remain curious and hearts that never cease to seek truth.⁣

May students embrace each season of life as an opportunity to learn, reflect, and deepen their understanding of Your boundless wisdom. May their pursuit of knowledge always lead them closer to You. Amen.⁣

Loving Father, we pray for students to establish healthy boundaries and achieve a balanced work-life equilibrium.⁣

Just as Jesus withdrew to solitary places to pray, we ask for the wisdom to set aside time for rest, rejuvenation, and self-care. ⁣

Grant students discernment to prioritize their well-being and recognize that their worth is not solely defined by their achievements. May they find refreshment in You and experience the joy of balanced living. Amen.⁣

Today is the Fall Equinox, or the first day of Autumn. Read this prayer based on the Roman Ritual asking God to bless the harvest of this season:⁣

Lord God almighty, you never fail to bestow on us an abundance of heavenly gifts, as well as the rich fruits of the earth.⁣

We give thanks to you in your glory for this harvest of grain.⁣

We beg you again to:⁣

- bless the harvest which we have received from your bounty⁣

- preserve it, and⁣

shield it from harm. ⁣

Grant also that, having had our desire for earthly needs filled, we may eagerly and generously share your gifts with those whom you ask us to care for. ⁣

We pray always in the name of Jesus Christ through whom all good things come.⁣

Amen.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in gratitude for the achievements and milestones students reach.⁣

Just as You blessed the Israelites with abundance, we pray that they may acknowledge You as the source of their success.⁣

Help them remain humble in their accomplishments and ever thankful for the opportunities they’ve been given. May their hearts overflow with gratitude and their lives be a testament to Your goodness. Amen.⁣

Heavenly Father, we bring before You the burden of academic pressures that students carry.⁣

Just as You provided manna to sustain the Israelites in the wilderness, we pray for sustenance and strength for students facing academic challenges. ⁣

Grant them resilience, perseverance, and a sense of balance in their studies. May they find comfort and peace in You, knowing that their worth is not solely defined by their grades but by Your love for them. Amen.⁣

Today our nation celebrates Constitution Day in remembrance of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. But why celebrate? Read this reflection from Michael Andrews, Chancellor to the Diocese of Lansing:⁣

Constitution Day offers us the opportunity to reflect on the supreme expression of civil law in our nation. At its core, the U.S. Constitution embodies the principle—proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence—that justice, freedom, and rights are not granted by government, but are inherent gifts endowed by the Creator, which the government is duty-bound to protect. It is a framework strongly shaped by the wisdom of classical philosophy and the moral vision of Christian theology.⁣

The Constitution’s safeguards, including the separation of powers, checks and balances, and the Bill of Rights, arise from a sober understanding of the human condition: while we are capable of great good, we are also inclined toward sin, ambition, and injustice.⁣

Nevertheless, law alone cannot preserve liberty; it must be sustained by moral character. Alexis de Tocqueville, the French observer of the young United States, wrote: “Despotism may be able to do without faith, but freedom cannot.”⁣

Constitution Day challenges us to renew our commitment to the moral and spiritual foundations that make freedom – the capacity to choose the good – and self-government possible: a people formed in truth, guided by right judgment, and observant of the law of God.

Today is the feast of St. Robert Bellarmine, a prominent theologian during the counter-reformation. ⁣

Read this reflection by Fr. Brian Lenz, the pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Flushing, MI, about why St. Robert should be a model of sainthood for all of us:⁣

St. Robert Bellarmine was a brilliant Jesuit theologian, cardinal, and one of the key figures in the Counter-Reformation. Born in 1542 in Italy, he dedicated his life to defending and clarifying Catholic doctrine at a time when the Church faced deep divisions.⁣

As a professor, he taught theology with clarity and conviction, and his writings became foundational in reaffirming Catholic beliefs. Despite his high-ranking roles, Bellarmine lived a humble and simple life, showing special concern for the poor around him. Today he is laid to rest under the altar of a sparsely adorned chapel within the otherwise magnificently ornate Church of St. Ignatius in Rome.⁣

St. Robert’s life impacts me as a model of modern-day sainthood. He lived in a culture of pervasive misinformation and deep spiritual confusion. Just as we do now. His courage to engage the world and remain steadfast to Church teaching, even when unpopular, challenges me to do the same. His charity toward the lowly and vulnerable reminds me that I too must render an account for the least of my brothers and sisters. ⁣

But all Robert Bellarmine needed was one life to become a saint. So what will you and I do with ours?⁣

St. Robert Bellarmine, pray for us!

Dear Lord, we bring before You students who are preparing for tests and assessments.⁣

Just as You stilled the storm on the sea, we ask for a calm and focused mind as they approach their exams.⁣

Grant them the ability to recall and apply what they have learned. Ease their anxieties and replace them with confidence and clarity. May their efforts be rewarded with success, and may they feel Your presence with them through each question and answer. Amen.⁣

Lord of order and structure, we lift up students who struggle with managing their time and responsibilities.⁣

Just as Jesus demonstrated purposeful focus in His ministry, we pray for the ability to manage time wisely.⁣

Grant students the discipline to prioritize their tasks, the insight to plan ahead, and the grace to adapt to unexpected changes. May their efforts be fruitful, and may they find joy in the rhythm of their days. Amen.⁣
