Poor Clares of Langhorne, PA

Poor Clares of Langhorne, PA Countess Anna Bentivoglio followed her sister, Constance, into the Poor Clares. She longed for more austerity and asked for special penances.

the Poor Clares of Langhorne are a contemplative community of Roman Catholic Sisters who praise and worship the Lord through a life of prayer, work, and life in community. Then Pope Pius IX commissioned the two Bentivoglio sisters – Mother Magdalen and her sister Constance - to go from Italy to America. They arraived in the “New World” on October 12, 1875, and established the monastery of the Order of Saint Clare in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1878. In 1915, after 8 monasteries had been founded in the United States, word came to the Poor Clares that “someone was interested in building a monastery for them in the city of Philadelphia.” The Abbess of the Boston Monastery, Mother Mary Charitas Burns, received word of this request and on March 25, 1916 a group of Sisters moved into Philadelphia. Sixty years later, the Sisters began looking for a new Monastery, and our current site located on 17 acres of land in Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, was chosen. The cornerstone was laid in 1976 and the monastery was officially dedicated on September 8, 1977
