Preparation for the Lord's Day
"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." —James 4:8
As believers, the act of coming to church is more than just a routine; it’s an opportunity to draw closer to God. Worship is not only about what we receive but what we pour into our experience. Just like planting seeds in a field, our investment in church determines the spiritual fruit we’ll reap.
Get Out of Church What You Put into It
Psalm 100:4 encourages us: "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."
Our attitudes and actions when entering church influence our connection to God and His message. Preparation begins long before we walk through the sanctuary doors. The way we approach worship matters, and every intentional choice we make contributes to a fulfilling experience.
Practical Points for Enriching Church
• Show Up Early: Arriving early sets the tone for quiet reflection and readiness to worship.
• Come Expecting to Hear from God: Pray for God to speak to your heart and come with an open mind, eager to receive His word.
• Fellowship with Others: Building relationships with fellow believers strengthens the body of Christ.
• Take Notes: Engage with the sermon and write down truths that resonate. It helps deepen understanding and application.
• Pray Before Church: Spend time in prayer asking God to show you His message for the day.
• Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Rest well beforehand, so you are refreshed and focused during service.
• Be Involved in the Service: Participate actively in worship, prayer, and singing.
• Ask God to Transform You: Request His help to leave better, wiser, and closer to Him than when you came.
• Attend Expecting God to Move: Remember that God is present and working, and your faith fuels the atmosphere of worship.
In the words of A.W. Tozer: "What we think about when we are free to think about what we will—this is what we are or will soon become. Our voluntary thoughts not only reveal what we are; they predict what we will become. Our deeds will be according to those things we think about."
