Identity & Security in the Lord

Psalm 16:2, 5 (NIV®)
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” … LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.

How do you define success? We are surrounded by voices saying that to be successful we need to achieve this, earn that, go there, live here, send our kids to school there, and on and on. I decided long ago that the greatest aspiration I would ever have is to be included in the people of God. That is more important to me than being included in any other group. It’s more important to me than anything I will ever become, achieve, or accumulate. I have made it the primary assignment of my life. I may hold some other aspirations and participate in some other things, but every one of them is secondary to that primary goal. It means I’m going to stand outside of some groups because they have defined success in a way that I’ve chosen not to define it. And you know what? That’s okay because my identity and security are in the Lord.

THINK ABOUT IT
Choosing to make your relationship with God your first priority will probably keep you outside some groups. And that’s okay because there are some groups where a Christ-follower should not feel comfortable.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You that You have promised to be my provision and my security. Forgive me for any time I have looked to anyone or anything other than You for those things. I place my confidence and my rest in Your mighty hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Be Faithful in the Small Things

2 Timothy 1:5 (NIV®)
I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

As Paul writes to Timothy, he commends him for the faith he first saw in Timothy’s mother and grandmother and that now lives in him. Like any homemakers, Lois and Eunice would have completed many daily tasks at their kitchen table. We can imagine that they would have shared their values with Timothy through years of daily conversations there. For many generations, the kitchen table was the hub of every home. It was the place where we were reminded of our faith and our biblical values. It was where we received godly advice. Unfortunately, we've moved away from that time together as families. I want to invite you to put down your devices and come back to the kitchen table at least once a week. Whether your group is two or ten, regularly gathering at the kitchen table and practicing hospitality can help you grow closer to one another and strengthen your faith as you share life’s ups and downs and what God is doing in your daily lives.

THINK ABOUT IT
It's most often the simple expressions of faith that bring transformation to our lives. God doesn't need us to do extravagant things or extraordinary things. He needs us to be faithful in the small things—like sitting at the kitchen table and sharing our faith and values with those around us.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your goodness to me. Thank You that You have been faithful even when my faith has been weak. Help me practice hospitality for Your purposes. Fill me with the desire to share my faith and my values with friends and family. Make my table and my home a powerful force for You in the world. In Jesus’ name, amen

Serving in Humility

John 13:3–5 (NIV®)
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

This is an astounding scene of humility and servanthood. And it’s being demonstrated by Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, the Son of God, the Messiah. This is the most remarkable man these people have ever known. They have witnessed Him walk on water, open blind eyes, and raise the dead. Yet at this critical time in His life, with His death just hours away, He wraps a towel around His waist and begins to wash their feet. If we’re going to change the culture instead of being changed by the culture, we will need to demonstrate that same kind of humility and servanthood. That means doing more than showing up at the church building. That means showing the world that our lives are not our own because we serve a King who is worthy of everything we have to offer Him: our time, our talent, and our treasure.

THINK ABOUT IT
“I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” (Romans 12:1, NIV®)

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times when I have volunteered to do the minimum instead of having a heart set on truly serving. Forgive me for when I have taken on a task for any reason other than to show Your love and advance Your Kingdom. I acknowledge that every day and every breath is a gift from You, and I yield myself in service to my King. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In the Presence of Enemies

Psalm 23:5 (NLT®)
You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.

Psalm 23 is most frequently quoted because of the comfort and reassurance it offers. But verse 5 makes me shake my head a little, when David says that God will prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. I don’t know about you, but I don’t particularly want to sit down to a meal with people who see me as their enemy. I’d rather sit down with my friends—or at least people who are not hoping or even working for my downfall. But then I remember that at one of the last meals Jesus had with His disciples, He sat and ate with an adversary present. Not everyone at Jesus’ table was on board with His message and mission. In fact, the betrayal of one of them would lead to His death. Don’t be dismayed or discouraged when you do not have complete uniformity of thought at your table. Be kind and show the love of Christ to everyone there, and God will honor you and bless you.

THINK ABOUT IT
When we surround ourselves with people who agree with us on most things, we reduce our opportunities to talk with people who do not know Jesus. Let’s keep our hearts and our homes open to everyone God sends our way.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, Your promises to me are profound and beautiful. Thank You for Your promise to honor me and bless me. Help me to keep my heart and home open to everyone You send my way, so they might hear about Jesus. In His name, amen.

Sink Your Roots into Jesus

Colossians 2:6–7 (NLT®)
And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

I live in a part of Tennessee that experiences some extreme weather. We can have one or more tornadoes roar through in the late winter and spring, but they can pop up at other times of the year, too. We always have a little snow, but the real danger comes with ice that freezes on everything it touches. After one of these weather events strikes our community, you can see its effects in the trees. No matter the size or the magnificence of the tree, it can be toppled by a tornado or a load of heavy ice. It’s always surprising to see a tree that looked strong and solid suddenly upended with exposed roots. Paul encourages the Colossians to let their roots grow deep into Jesus. He knows that with deep roots, a crisis may cause a broken limb or two, but we will not be toppled. Our faith will grow stronger, and we will overflow with thankfulness.

THINK ABOUT IT
Our strength and ability to endure directly relates to how much we invest in growing our faith, our trust in the Lord, and our relationship with Jesus.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I have imagined that I have made myself strong, successful, and able to protect myself from the attacks of the world. Forgive me for that arrogance and pride. Help me to sink my roots into You, Lord, so I will be anchored in Your Truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Overcoming Destructive Fear

Psalm 56:3–4 (NIV®)
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid.

David wrote this psalm after he was taken captive by the Philistines (1 Samuel 21:10–15). We know that David was a brave man who had already faced lions and bears and even a giant. Yet here he admitted that he was sometimes afraid. Fear is a perfectly normal human emotion, and there are times when it is foolish to not feel afraid. Our goal is to live lives that are not dominated by destructive fear. In order to do that, we must do as David did and choose to trust God. When I recognize that fear has gained a foothold in my heart, that’s like waving a red flag in front of me. If I will step back and look at the situation, I can recognize that I have been trusting myself more than I have been trusting God. I have been depending on my own strength or my own wisdom or my own resources instead of giving the situation to Him. Fear is natural, but we can learn to overcome destructive fear by learning to trust God more fully.

THINK ABOUT IT
Consider the times and places when you are fearful—the quiet ones you may not admit, even to yourself. Often, the places and situations where we experience fear are the same places where God gives us the opportunity to trust Him more.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promises of deliverance and freedom through the blood of Jesus. Help me face the challenges of life—not in my own strength, but in Yours. When I have overcome, I will give You all the honor and praise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
