UPDATE on planned apartment development at 400 w. gov. john sevier:
I am hosting a workshop in the City/County Building, small assembly room, at 8/17, 5 pm, to discuss the use of a Payment In Lieu Of Taxes for the purpose of building "workforce housing." Basically the developer wants to get 50% tax break on property taxes (or more than 50% if taxes ever go up) in exchange for giving a couple hundred dollars of discount to luxury apartments to 40 out of 80 apartments.

The vote will take place on 8/31 at 5 pm, at the commission meeting. If you oppose some people getting tax breaks at the expense of Knox County tax payers, who have to subsidize the cost of the roads, law enforcement, and schools of those 80 families, you should attend.

The South Doyle Neighborhood Association has delivered a statement to the AdvanceKnox.org, County Mayor Henderson and Commission to roll back the plan to the original plan Map 1.

UPDATE!! APARTMENTS ON W. GOV JOHN SEVIER AT MOUNTAIN GROVE
I posted a couple weeks ago about a developer wanting a property tax break to build luxury apartments next to the current apartment complex that is behind Weigels. The developer wants to build 80 luxury apartments, but only pay property tax based upon 40 apartments - a 50% break on property taxes - to maintain its Return on Investment. The developer is saying that it will provide a $150 - $200 discount on the price of the rent for these 40 apartments, and is calling those "Workforce housing".

South Knox had a strong response and a good showing at the July County Commission meeting. Lots of people were there, and a couple people spoke at the public forum.

If you oppose a tax break for developers, which means that the rest of the county - including you - has to subsidize the residents of those apartments by paying for the roads, schools, and law enforcement they use, then you need to stay engaged. There is a meeting next Monday, 8/17, at 5 PM in the Small Assembly room of the City County Building. The developers will be appearing and making a case for their project. You need to attend and voice your opinion.

Then there will be one more important meeting. On 8/25 at 5 PM at the City County Building will be the meeting where the County Commission will be voting on whether to grant the tax break to the developers. If you are against developers paying lip service to "workforce housing" and then getting a huge tax break, you need to show up to that meeting and voice your opinion.
