Meet the Candidates

South High Senior Living

835 Tipton Ave
Knoxville, TN 37920

July 16th from 6:30 PM to 9 PM

Featuring candidates for Knox County Mayor and Knox County School Board District 9, this is an opportunity for residents to hear directly from the candidates, learn where they stand on issues affecting our community, and ask questions about the topics that matter most to voters before the August election.

Invitations were extended to all candidates in both races. Beau Hawk and Brandy Jenkins have confirmed their participation.

Whether your interests include education, public safety, economic development, transportation, housing, infrastructure, parks, or the future of Knox County, we hope you'll join us for this important community conversation.

The forum will be moderated by Leslie Wylie Bateman, Publisher and Editor of Inside of Knoxville, who will guide the discussion and present questions submitted by the community.

We encourage community members to submit questions in advance so we can address the issues most important to Knoxville and Knox County residents.

Visit our online form to submit questions: https://forms.gle/hUfMoMqTvrAakyGV6

The event is free and open to the public with ample free and convenient parking. Light refreshments will be served.

This event is presented by the South Knoxville Neighborhood and Business Coalition (SKNBC) in partnership with the South Doyle Neighborhood Association, the South Knoxville Alliance of Businesses and Professionals, and Old Sevier Merchants Association.

Candidates participating in other races that will be on the ballot have been invited to attend and meet with community members before and after the forum. Visit the Election Commission website to see the offices that will be on the August ballot [https://knoxcounty.org/election/election_schedule_2026.php]

There's more to the housing crunch than just zoning. Street design also plays a direct role by determining how much land is available for homes versus infrastructure, with wide, car-oriented streets consuming valuable space and increasing long-term costs.

In contrast, compact, connected, human-scaled street networks reduce infrastructure burdens, support more housing and activity, and create walkable environments that make neighborhoods both more livable and economically productive.

New Hopewell meeting March 30 4:30-6.

Update 4/9/2026: The comment function in the draft zoning map will remain active as we work on a second draft map.

Original post 3/20/2026:
The draft zoning map for the Unified Development Ordinance is now available for review at AdvanceKnox.org/UDO

The map includes a feature that lets you compare a property’s current and proposed zoning and allows you to make comments directly in the map through April 5th.

Several pop-in events are scheduled so that you can ask questions and discuss the map with staff. Get more info at AdvanceKnox.org/UDO/Meetings

For many properties, changes will be minimal - uses will stay the same, though the name of the zoning district will change. In areas where infrastructure is in place, zoning will change to support the vision of the Comprehensive Plan.

If a property is rezoned, it will not affect the current use of the property. The new zoning would only affect future development on that property.

Events are: Monday, March 30, 2026 from 4:30–6:30 PM at Northshore Elementary; Monday, March 30, 2026 from 4:30–6:30 PM at New Hopewell Elementary; Tuesday, March 31, 2026 from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM at Three Ridges Golf Course; and Tuesday, March 31, 2026 from 4:30–6:30 PM at Powell Library.
